303. Dhyana on Brahma

Verse 303

காணவே அமரபக்ஷம் பூர்வ பக்ஷந்தன்னில்

கலந்து நின்ற ஆசனத்தில் கருணைவைத்து

பூணவே குண்டலமுங் கிரிடமுஞ்சாத்தி

புகழான சரஸ்வதியும் வாமபாகம்

பேணவே பரிவாரஞ் சூழ்ந்து நிற்க

பெருமையுடன் இருதயத்தில் தியானம் பண்ணி

தோணவே மானதமாய்ப் பூசை செய்தால்

சுத்தமுடன் தியானமடா சுகமாய்ப் பாரே

Translation:

To see the the celestials’ stand and that of objectors’

Placing in the asana with mercy

Adorning earrings and crown

With Sarasvathi on the left side

Nurturing, and surrounded by the entourage

Contemplating in the heart with glory

If mental worship is performed

The pure dhyana- see it.

Commentary:

The previous steps of ashtanga yoga, yama, niyama, asana, pranayama, prathyahara and dharana are processes involving the body.  From dhyana onwards, the processes involve the mind more than the body.  While the previous steps involved brining the body under control these subsequent steps involve regulating the mind and perception.  Dhyana starts with contemplation of the various deities, the athidevata of the cakra, who represent various principles.  The first step starts with contemplation on Brahma and his consort Sarasvathi.  They are contemplated in the form where they are placed on an asana with ornaments such as kundala and crown are placed on them.  Sarasvati is on the left side of Brahma.  They are surrounded by parivara or their entourage.  They are contemplated in the heart and mental worship is performed to them. 

அஷ்டாங்க யோகத்தின் முந்தைய படிகளான இயமம், நியமம், ஆசனம், பிராணாயாமம், பிரத்தியாகாரம், தாரணை ஆகியவை உடலைச் சார்ந்த வழிமுறைகள்.  இனி வரப்போகும் படிகளான தியானம் முதலியவை மனதைச் சார்ந்தவை.  உடலை முந்தைய படிகளினால் கட்டுக்குள் கொண்டுவந்தால் மனத்தைக் கட்டுக்குள் கொண்டுவருவது எளிதாகிறது. தியானத்தில் மானச பூஜைகள் முக்கிய இடத்தை வகிக்கின்றன.  சக்கரங்களுக்கு அதிதேவதைகளான பிரம்மா, விஷ்ணு, சிவன் ஆகியவர்கள், அவர்கள் குறிக்கும் தத்துவங்களைக் கருத்தில் கொண்டவாறு தியானிக்கப்படுகிறார்கள்.  தியானத்தின் முதல் படியில் பிரம்மா அவரது துணைவியாரான சரஸ்வதியுடன் தியானிக்கப்படுகிறார்.  அவர்கள் ஒரு ஆசனத்தில் அமர்ந்தவர்களாக, குண்டலங்களும் கிரீடங்களும் அணிந்தவர்களாக பிரம்மாவின் இடது பாகத்தில் சரஸ்வதி இருப்பதாக, அவர்களைப் பரிவாரங்கள் சூழ்ந்திருக்க மனதில் தியானித்து இதயத்தில் பூசை செய்யப்படுகிறார்கள்.
