110. The jnana remains in siva jnana yogam

Verse 110

Translation:
Removing the three innate impurities in the three voids (paazh)
Over the hair bridge above the state of self
Going beyond the river of fire, the sky
With the mind abiding in the supreme space
In the king, the efflugence of the space, as self
The siva yoga jnana that is focused
As the state of self at the terminus of the body, the vaadhi
Are those who remain desiring it, those who realized sivajnana.

Commentary:
The three innate impurities are egoity (aanava), doership (karma) and delusion (maya).  Paazh or void is like a region or zone that separates each of these three impurities.  Tirumular explains these three voids in tantiram 8 section 27.  Realizing the gross body, subtle body, jnanendriya, karmendriya, anthakarana and prakriti as different from the self helps the soul to cross the maya paazh or the void of maya.  Realizing that the seven vidya tattva of kala, kaala, niyathi, raga etc as the causes for limitations helps the soul cross the bodha paazh.  Realizing the nature of cause and effect or karya and karana leads to crossing the upasantha paazh.  When a soul crosses these three voids, it remains in a pure state of knowledge.  Agatthiyar calls this state as the state of sivajnana yoga or association with siva jnana, a state free of any limitations. Hair bridge and river of fire are symbolism to indicate the path of consciousness that reaches the supreme state.  The jnani remains as the effulgence of the space, at the point where the body and limitations terminate.

109. The jnani remains as jeeva pranamaya

Verse 109

Translation:
Listen son, cutting the screen of Brahma and Vishnu
Removing the screen of merciful Rudra
Push the screen of Maheswara and rule
Tie up the screen of Sadasiva that is above it
Burning away the five senses, take pledge
Remaining with the blissful, embodiment of jiva prana,
Beyond the eye and the ear
They will remain mercifully as prana, the jnani.

Commentary:
We saw in the previous verse that jnana is a state attained by a yogin as a consequence of charya kriya and yoga.  These three steps help the yogin to cross several principles represented by thr deities, Brahma, Vishnu, Rudra etc.  In this verse Agatthiyar equates these limiting principles to screens.  He tells Pulatthiyar to cut away one screen at a time and reach the state above Sadasiva.  The limitations caused by the senses are also removed and the soul remains as Jivapranamaya.  Such souls are the jnani or saints who remain beyond sensual distractions of ears and eyes. He remains in a state where he gathers knowledge without the interference of the senses.

108. Jnana state

Verse 108

Translation:
From charya to jnana, I revealed,
See the self knowing it as samarasa
If you see the soul and the body
From charya to jnana will occur as truth
By the grace of guru, son,
To look with focus the state of jnana carefully
To climb the sky from charya up to jnana
Listen about the subtlety, in the proper way.

Commentary:
Among the four steps, charya, kriya, yoga and jnana the first three occur due to the yogin’s effort.  Jnana, on the other hand, occurs as a consequence of the first three steps.  Jnana is a state.  Samadhi that is attained during yoga gives a glimpse of this jnana state.  Hence, it was mentioned before that Samadhi is not a permanent state.  There is the distinction of the knower and known.  In the jnana state the yogin becomes that state.  He experiences being that state, being the five doers, Siva, Sakthi, the seven worlds etc.  This occurs due to guru’s grace.  However this state is also not a permanent state as the yogin has not crossed the restrictions of the body.  He experiences being in the all pervasive state while still remaining in the body.  The soul and body mentioned here refers to akara and ukara. Akara the letter which stands for Siva represents the soul and ukara the letter that stands for Sakthi represents the body.

107. A jnani will remain as aham brahmasmi

Verse 107

Translation:
Yes, son, the discussing one, as that entity
The abiding five performers as that/self
The self as Sakthi and Siva
As the merciful five doers as self
The seven worlds
Being self, with fortitude
The “I am Him”
The jnani (wise one) is one who remains as jyothi (effulgence).

Commentary:
Agatthiyar says that the jnani or the one who has reached the step of jnana will remain as the supreme entity, the five doers or performers namely Sadasiva, Maheswara, Rudra, Vishnu and Brahma and the seven worlds- bhu, bhuvar, suvar, maha, tapa, jana and satyam.  He will remain with the consciousness “I am Him”- Aham Brahmasmi.  He will remain as the effulgence or flame.

106. The states that soul remains in, in the jnana step

Verse 106

Translation:
The self becoming the effulgence, the five letters
The self becoming the sadanandham
The self becoming the three letters
The self becoming the entity that abides into oneness
The self becoming the equivalent of the distinctions
The self becoming the countless mantra
The alchemy of gevunam and the eight siddhis
The self becoming the unspeaking silence.

Commentary:
Agatthiyar describes the state that the yogi attains when he reaches the jnana step. The soul or the limited self slowly loses its limited state and becomes various unlimited principles.  Agatthiyar says that the soul becomes the effulgence, the five letters namasivaya, the eternal bliss, the three letters of a, u and ma, and all the principles abiding within the singular state
Samarasa is becoming the same essence, sama+rasa,  without any distinctions.  The self also becomes countless mantra, alchemy and the eight siddhis of anima, mahima, lagima etc and the supreme silence.

105. The poorna is paripurna.

Verse 105

Translation:
See the space on the top and merge with it
Seeing that space with mercy and merging with it
Adorn it with the chittam becoming unsupported (niradhara)
Becoming the fully complete that remained as the complete (soul)
Worshipping Siva, Brahma and Vishnu
Clearing all the evil karma completely
Nurture it, without taste or desire
It is the flame of the the effulgence of the supreme space.

Commentary:
In the previous verse Agatthiyar described the step of jnana or realization as merging with the flame of kundalini with the knowledge that it is nothing but the soul.  In this verse he is expanding it further by stating that the chittham or consciousness is in the unsupported state, that is, it is beyond the ajna.  The soul attains the state of the Divine, the paripurna or fully complete.  This happens by eradicating all the “vinai” or fruits of karma.  Agathiyar says that one should pray to Siva, Brahma and Vishnu for the same.  These deities are principles that represent the muladhara, svadishtana and manipuraka that cause a specific birth.  Besides cutting away the cause for this birth, the yogin has to let go of desires and interests also as these lead to new samskara and thus karma that would cause further births.  He adds further that the “atma jyothi” or the flame of the soul is none other than the “param jyothi” or the supreme flame of the Divine who is also represented by the supreme space.

101. yogam-summary

Verse 101

Translation:
See son, the Siva, after bathing
Through mental fortitude in the arena
Going to the great threshold, entering it
Holding to the tip of the whorl
Place firmly through vaasi, the six adhara
Piercing them, going to the niradhara (unsupported), universe, going there
Cherish it, while remaining in that state
Seeing the sun and the moon within.

Commentary:
Agatthiyar summarises yogam as entering the great threshold, that in the muladhara through mental fortitude, planting the vaasi firmly piercing the six adhara, going to the niradhara or the space beyond the ajna, reaching the end of the space and experiencing the sun and the moon while remaining in that state.  This is Samadhi which is experiencing the sivam.  This is not a permanent state but it gives a taste of the ultimate.
The sun and the moon represent the kala or knowledge which will be explained in the next verse.

104. Jnana

Verse 104

Translation:
See son, I talked about the path of yoga, elaborately
Now listen about the path of wisdom (jnana)
In the adhara mula (muladhara)
The merciful fire, the spirit,
Join it, by remaining in the flame of the triangle
By pervading the beautiful eye, the decorative circumference (thiruvaasi)
Associate with it considering the house to belong to you
Remaining with focus see the self.

Commentary:
Agatthiyar says that jnana or wisdom is associating with the fire of kundalini with the knowledge that it is the spirit.  He says that this is performed by remaining in the flame of triangle which refers to the ajna cakra.  Thiruvaasi is the decorative circumference within which is depicted the deity.  The Saiva siddhantha work, “unmai vilakkam” calls the omkara as the thiruvaasi.  Here Agatthiyar calls the third eye or the eye of discrimination as the thiruvaasi as it encompasses the flame, the Divine within it.  The house mentioned here is the ajna.

103. Agatthiyar's authoritative definition of Yoga

Verse 103

Translation:
Seek and see it as the fully complete
Without seeing the merciful four kalas
Calling themselves as servitors, controlling hunger and performing austerities
Controlling the breath (vaasi) that circulates
Without knowing the status, seeking rivers
As sought, roaming searching all the mountains
Without knowing their location, performing yoga
They will drift without seeing the soul in the body.

 Commentary:
This verse establishes unequivocally the definition of yoga.  Yoga is not what it is popular as these days.  Yoga is seeing the four missing kala from the suryakala when the suryakala and chandrakala are in harmony.  This is the purpose and end goal of yoga, nothing else.  Instead, people call themselves spiritual, perform countless austerities, visit mountains/ rivers and thus waste their lives away as none of these will take them to their target.  They will never attain self awareness.

102. Chandrakala and suryakala

Verse 101
Translation:
See son, the Chandra kala is sixteen
The essence Suryakala is twelve
When both the rays remain together
Out of the twelve of suryakala
That which remaine within the body
Where did it go and where did it remain
Consider son, the remaining four
As the fullycomplete, see it so.

Commentary:
Agatthiyar explains an important concept in pranayama here.  The breath that flow in throught the ida nadi is called the chandrakala.  Kala means measure.  Thus, it flows for sixteen measures.  The breath that flows through the pingala is surya kala.  It flows in for twelve measures.  When the Chandrakala and suryakala are in harmony out of the twelve measures of suryakala four measures circulate up in the skull, above the neck region and the eight through out the body.  Siddhas say that when the eight is joined to four then it is deathlessness.  Agatthiyar is talking about this four and eight here.  He says that no one knows where the four measures remains.  He tells Pulatthiyar that it is the fully complete, the Divine as it is the cause for divine experiences.  Joining the eight and four is yoga.

100. True Yoga

Verse 100

Translation:
I told you about the path of kriya, Son.
Listen to the path of yoga.
Raising the two rays in the whorl
Seeing the nine planets, the sign
Going within the space, the blessing
Standing beyond the glorious chitambaram
In the honey like pond of lotus flowers
See it by bathing in the pond the sacred one.

Commentary:
Agatthiyar spoke about charya first as the worship ritual with the flower of vaasi at the Sivalaya or the energy centers, the cakra and the rivers, the nadi.  Next he talked about kriya which is experiencing the union of Sakti and Siva at the energy centers and nadi.  Now he begins his description of yoga, the third limb of the four part pathway for realization.  Yoga is rasing the two rays, that of the sun and the moon, in the ida and pingala nadi, experiencing the nine planets that signs for different principles, going to the space of consciousness or chith ambaram, reaching the manasa sarovar or the region near the sahasrara and experiencing it.

Please refer to Agatthiyar meijnana kaviyam verse 117 for details on how the planets relate to the various cakras in the human body and the principles they represent.  Hence, Agatthiyar calls them as signs in this verse.  The space of consciousness is chith ambaram.  The manasa sarovar is the lake of the mind or an expanded state of consciousness.  The lake we see in Himalayas is an external representation of this internal lake.  Agatthiyar calls it the pond with lotus flowers.

The yoga means joining.  True yoga is where the limited consciousness reaches or joins its expanded state.

99. Union of eight and two in Sivalaya and rivers

Verse 99

Translation:
Dismiss the fools who know not their self
Pushing away climb to the house with a calm mind
Collect. The letter for eight is sivam
The firm letter for two is Sakthi
Remain with the eight and two being together
The locus, the Siva temples and rivers
Those who have not seen that state
Will roam around.  They are ignorant of the path of kriya.

Commentary:
Agatthiyar is describing an esoteric usage in the siddha marga.  “eight and two” is an important concept in the Tamil Siddha philosophy.  The Tamil letter for number eight is “a” and for two is “u”.  Thus, eight and two are akara and ukara.  Akara represents Siva and ukara represents Sakthi.  The ultimate goal of kriya is to experience the union of Siva and Sakthi, the joining of eight and two.  The path that leads to this experience is true kriya.  This union occurs in every chakra that Agatthiyar refers to as Sivalaya and the nadi or energy channels that he calls as rivers.  Thus, the yogin experiences a complete union of the duality, Siva and Sakthi, at the end of the kriya.

98. Charlatans who pretend that they are performing kriya

Verse 98

Translation:
They will hesitate, immersing in the river, sprinkling water
Adorning the sacred ash, bathing
They will be delusional closing both eyes
Taking the bell and ringing it speaking mad words
They will cheat, the charlatans
They are the thieves who do not know the state of Siva
Without seeing the pausing bindhu adhara
They will roam around in the land.  Push them away.

Commentary:
Agatthiyar is describing those who perform various rituals calling them kriya.  Such people will bathe in sacred waters, wear the sacred ash, sound the bell and talk useless words.  Agatthiyar says that they are souls who do not know “siva nilai” or the state of siva.  They do not see the bindhu that is paused as a body, and the adhara or support/cakra.  Agatthiyar advises Pulatthiyar to dismiss them without any consideration.
