165. Rituals for the body- 2

Verse 165

செய்யடா விபூதி தூளிதமே செய்து

திருவான புருவமத்தில் திலதப் பொட்டு

மெய்யடா தங்கமதால் பட்டஞ்செய்து

மேன்மைபெற ஐந்தெழுத்தை அதிலே மாறி

பையடா நெற்றிதனிற் பட்டங் கட்டிப்

பாங்குபெறச் சுகந்தமலர் மாலை சாற்றி

வையடா அமுதுகனி வர்க்கமுன்னே

வைத்தபின்பு தூபமொடு தீபங்காட்டே

Translation:

Perform “thoolitham” (spreading the fine powder) with sacred ash

In the middle of the brow a sacred dot.

Make a foil with gold

Draw the sacred five letters on it

Tie the foil on the forehead

Adorn a garland of fragrant flowers

Place food and fruits in front

Wave the lamp and fragrance.

Commentary:

After performing sacred ablution and adorning the body with silk cloth and sacred ash a thilakam should be adorned on the forehead.  A gold foil with the sacred five letters of namasivaya should be tied on the forehead.  The body should be adorned with garland made with fragrant flowers.  Food and fruit offerings should be placed in front of it.  A lamp (deepa) and fragrance (dhoopa) should be waved in front of it.

உடலுக்கு அபிடேகம் செய்து பட்டுடுத்தி விபூதி பூசிய பிறகு நெற்றியில் திலகமிடவேண்டும் (திலதம் என்றால் எள், இங்கு திலகம் என்று இருக்கவேண்டும் என்று தோன்றுகிறது).  அதன் பிறகு தங்கத் தகடால் ஒரு பட்டம் செய்து அதில் நமசிவாய ஐந்தெழுத்தைக் கீறி (மாறி என்று இருப்பது கீறி என்று இருக்குமோ என்று தோன்றுகிறது) அதை அவரது நெற்றியில் கட்ட வேண்டும்.  நறுமண மலர்களால் ஆன மாலையைச் சாற்றி, அமுதும் கனிகளும் படைத்து அவருக்கு தூப தீபம் காட்டவேண்டும் என்கிறார் அகத்தியர்.
