162. How to construct a tomb (samadhi) for a liberated soul

Verse 162

சமாதியளவு

நாட்டமுடன் பூரணத்தில் நாடினோர்க்கு

நாதாந்த சமாதியுட நன்மைகேளு

தேட்டமுடன் எவ்விடமேயானாலென்ன

சிவசிவா அந்திடத்தில் செம்மை பண்ணி

வாட்டமுடன் பத்தடியிற் சதுரமாக

மைந்தனே ரெண்டு முழ ஆழஞ் செய்து

ஆட்டமுடன் அதின் கீழே ஆறடியில் மைந்தா

அப்பனே முச்சாணிலாழம் பண்ணே

Translation:

Measurements for Samadhi

For those who sought the poornam

Listen about the effects of their Samadhi

It does not matter which place it is

Siva sivaa!  Cleaning that place

As a ten feet square

Digging it two handspand deep

Digging within it for six feet

Create a depth of three palm spans

Commentary:

Agatthiyar is talking about what to do with the body of those who sought the terminus of manifestation, the nadhantha.  He tells us that there is no special sacred place where they should be buried.  He says that a place should be picked and a square of ten feet should be cleaned.  Within it a two handspan depression should be created.  Six feet below that a depth of three palmspans (the length obtained when the thumb and the little finger are expanded).

நாதாந்தத்தை நாடிய ஆத்மாக்கள் முக்தாத்மாக்கள்.  அவ்வாறு நாதாந்தத்தை அடைந்தவர்களது உடலை எவ்வாறு சமாதிபடுத்தவேண்டும் என்று அகத்தியர் இப்பாடலில் கூறுகிறார்.  அவர்களது உடலை இடுவதற்கு விசேஷமான இடம் என்று எதுவும் இல்லை.  ஏதாவது ஒரு இடத்தைத் தேர்ந்தெடுத்து அதில் பத்தடி சதுரத்தை சுத்தப்படுத்தவேண்டும்.  அதில் இரண்டு முழ ஆழத்துக்குத் தோண்டவேண்டும்.  அதன் கீழ் ஆறடியில் மூன்று சாண் அளவுக்குக் குழியை ஏற்படுத்தவேண்டும் என்கிறார் அகத்தியர்.
