420. A danger in Srividya upasana

Verse 420

என்மகனே புலத்தியமா ரிஷியே அய்யா

இன்பரசந் தான் கொடுத்த மாதர் தன்னை

தன்மையுடன் மோகமதாய் சரசஞ் செய்தால்

தான் நினைத்த காரியங்கள் தவறுண்டே போம்

உண்மையென்ற மந்திரங்கள் உதவாதய்யா

உடலதிலே செந்தீயும் உடனே பத்தும்

வண்மைஎன்ற கூற்றவனும் உயிரை உண்பான்

மார்க்கமுடன் மனதறிந்து மனத்தைக் காரே

Translation:

My son, Pulathiya Maharishi!, Sir

The lady who gave the blissful rasa,

If you interact with her with desire/love

The goals will become flawed

The truth, the mantra will not help, sir,

The body will catch fire immediately

The lord of death will consume the soul

Knowing the nature of the mind, protect it.

Commentary:

Agatthiyar is cautioning a Sakthi upasaka about the problem that can happen during his practice.  In Srividya upasana the worshiper eulogizes Sakthi as Bala, a nine year old girl, as Sundari and beautiful maiden or Tripura Bhairavi, an old lady.  Agatthiyar advises Pulathiyar that it is safe to worship Sakthi as Bala, a little girl.  Otherwise, if he worships her as beautiful lady, he will be buffeted by desire towards her.  His goal will be messed up, he will chase the wrong goal.  Even mantra recitation will not help him as he will dig himself deeper and deeper into his wrong goal.  The body will be consumed by the heat, which Agatthiyar calls as verdant fire.  The sadhaka will lose his life.  All these will happen due to the mind, the seat of emotions, experiences.  Hence, he advises Pulathiyar to not embark on worshipping Sakthi as a lady but worship her as a little girl. 

This clarifies why Bala is worshipped as the first step in Srividya upasana.  Until the sadhaka has attained sufficient maturity he is not ready to go further.  Bala is considered as little girl of 3, 7 or 9 years old.  These numbers may correspond to the bhija akshara in her mantra that a sadhaka utters.

ஸ்ரீ வித்யா உபாசனையில் ஏற்படக்கூடிய அபாயத்தை அகத்தியர் இப்பாடலில் குறிப்பிடுகிறார்.  ஸ்ரீவித்யா உபாசனையில் தேவி, பாலை அல்லது சிறு குழந்தை, சுந்தரி அல்லது அழகான பெண், அல்லது திரிபுர பைரவி அல்லது வயதான பெண்ணாக வழிபடப்படுகிறாள்.  இவற்றில் பாலை வழிபாடே அபாயமற்றது என்று குறிக்கிறார் அகத்தியர்.  தகுந்த மனவுறுதி இல்லையென்றால் தேவியை அழகான பெண்ணாக வழிபடுபவர் தமது மனதில் மோகம் ஏற்பட்டு அவளை மோகிக்கத் தொடங்கி தனது இலக்கைவிட்டு வழுவிவிடுவார்.  மந்திர உச்சாடனங்கள் அவருக்குப் பாதுகாப்பு அளிப்பதில்லை.  அவரது உடலில் அக்னி அதிகரித்து எரிந்து போய்விடும்.  காலன் அவரது உயிரைக் குடித்துவிடுவான்.  இவையனைத்தும் மனதினால் ஏற்படுவதால் ஒரு சாதகர் மனதின் தன்மையை அறிந்து அதைப் பாதுகாக்கவேண்டும் என்று புலத்தியருக்குக் கூறுகிறார் அகத்தியர்.

ஸ்ரீவித்யா உபாசனையில் பாலை வழிபாடு ஏன் முதல் படியாக இருக்கிறது என்பதை இப்பாடல் காட்டுகிறது.
