29. Karmendriya-the benefit they confer

Verse 29

கேளப்பா வாக்குடனே பாதம்பாணி

கிருபையுடன் பாயு உபஸ்தம் ஐந்துஞ்

சூளப்பா கர்ம இந்திரிய மாகுஞ்

சுகமாகத் தானரிந்து சுத்தமானால்

பாளப்பா போகாது ஞான மார்க்கம்

பத்தியுடன் ஐந்தையும் நீ கண்டு தேர்ந்தால்

கேளப்பா ஒன்றுமில்லை வாசியேகுங்

குறியாக ஐம்புலனைக் கூர்ந்து பாரே

Translation:

Listen son, along with vak (mouth), foot, hands

With mercy, the organ of excretion, organ of reproduction, the five

Are the karma indriya

Knowing them well and if they are purified

The jnana marga will not leave

If you know these five with devotion and become an expert

Listen son, there is nothing, the vaasi will ascend

Look at the five senses with focus.

Commentary:

After describing the senses of knowledge Agatthiyar is mentioning the senses of action, the karma indriya.  They are five in number- mouth, feet, hands, organ of reproduction and organ of excretion.  If the nature of these five are known and they are made pure Agatthiyar says that then the vaasi or life force will ascend.  Purity mentioned here is the external purity as these are organs of action. 

While the jnanendriya conferred atma darsanam, the karmendriya confer vaasi’s ascent.

ஞாநேந்திரியங்களை விளக்கியபிறகு அகத்தியர் கர்மேந்திரியங்கள் எனப்படும் ஐந்து புலன்களை இப்பாடலில் விளக்குகிறார்.  அவை வாய், கால், கை, கழிவுறுப்பு மற்றும் பிறப்புறுப்பு என்பவை.   இவற்றின் தன்மையை அறிந்து அவற்றை சுத்தமாக்கினால் வாசி ஏறும் என்கிறார் அகத்தியர்.  இங்கு குறிப்பிடும் சுத்தம் சரியை எனப்படும் வெளிச்சுத்தமாகும்.

ஞான இந்திரியங்கள் ஆத்ம தரிசனத்தையும் கர்ம இந்திரியங்கள் வாசியின் ஏற்றத்தையும் தருகின்றன என்கிறார் அகத்தியர்.
