12. Siva's instructions to Agatthiyar- perform kechara tapas and maintain silence

Verse 12

கண்டதொரு சகலகலை வேதந்தன்னை

கடைந்தெடுத்து சௌமிய சாகரமாய்ப்பாடி

கொண்டதொரு சூத்திரத்தைக் குருமுன் வைத்தேன்

குருவான எம்குருவும் நன்றாய்ப் பார்த்து

விண்டதொரு சாகரந்தான் ஆதி சூக்ஷம்

விளம்பாது விளம்பாது மவுனம் பண்ணு

அண்ட கேசரமதிலே தவஞ் செய்யென்று

ஆதிகுரு வேதியரும் சொன்னார் பாரே

Translation:

The Vedas that has all the knowledge/arts

Churning them and singing as saumya sagaram

I placed the sutra before the guru

Guru, my guru, seeing it well

The uttered sagaram is the original subtlety

With not say it, will not say it, keep silence

Perform austerities in the universe, the kechara (space of consciousness)

The Adiguru, the Vedhiyar, said so.

Commentary:

Not only did Agatthiyar turned the upadesa he got from Siva into a book form he also summarized the essentials of the Veda.  The result of this effort is the saumya sagaram.  Thus, it is the book of supreme knowledge. After composing the sagaram, Agatthiyar, the supreme siddha did not go about spreading it.  He had it verified by Siva.  Siva, his guru, examined it well and said this is the supreme subtlety.  He told Agatthiyar to not spread it arbitrarily but to maintain silence.  He told Agatthiyar to perform tapas in the kecharam.  Kecharam means “that which roams the ka or space”.  Thus, kecharam means supreme consciousness that pervades the space.  Siva instructed Agattthiyar to remain in the state of supreme space or vettaveli.

சிவனிடமிருந்து தான் பெற்ற உபதேசத்தை மட்டுமல்லாமல் வேதத்தின் சாரத்தையும் கடைந்தெடுத்து அகத்தியர் சௌமிய சாகரமாகப் புனைந்தார்.  பரமகுரு என்று போற்றப்படும் தலையாய சித்தரான அகத்தியர் உடனே அதைப் பிறருக்கு உபதேசிக்க முனையவில்லை.  அந்த நூலை சிவனிடம் அர்ப்பணித்து அவர் அதைப் பரிசோதிக்கச் செய்தார்.  சிவனும் அந்த நூலைப் பார்த்து அனைத்து எல்லா சூட்சுமங்களையும் விளக்கும் நூல் இது என்றும் இதனை அனைவருக்கும் கற்றுக்கொடுக்க வேண்டாம் என்றும் மௌனம் காக்கும்படியும் கேசரத்தில் தவம் செய்யுமாறும் கூறினார். கேசரம் என்றால் ஆகாயத்தில் உலவுதல் என்று பொருள்.  இங்கு ஆகாயம் என்பது வெட்டவெளி அல்லது பரவுணர்வு நிலை என்று பொருள்படும்.  இவ்வாறு சிவன் அகத்தியர் பரவுணர்வு நிலையில் இருக்குமாறு கூறினார்.
