218. Actual purpose of vasiyam or vaseekaram

Verse 218

ஓதடா ஆயிரத்தெண்ணுருவே செய்தால்

உண்மையென்ற ஆதிகணபதிதான் மைந்தா

நீதியுடன் உனதிடத்தில் நின்றுகொண்டு

நீநினைத்த காரியங்கள் வசியஞ் செய்வார்

பேதமென்ற வேதமெல்லாம் வசியமாகும்

பேரண்டஞ் சித்தண்டம் வசியமாகும்

வேதமென்ற வேதமொடு சாஸ்திரங்கள்

விளங்கிநின்ற மந்திரங்கள் வசியமாமே

Translation:

Son, if you recite it thousand eight times

Truthfully, Son, the Adi Ganapathy,

Will remain in you

Will attract the fruits of the actions

The different knowledge systems will come under your control

The macrocosm and microcosm will come under control

The Veda and sastras

And all the mantra will come under control.

Commentary:

Vasiyam is charm or making an object come to you.  Agatthiyar says that if one recites the mantra, siva siva om reeng ang, mentioned in the previous verse is recited 1008 times the Adi Ganapathy will remain with the yogin and make all the actions one wishes to perfom come to him.  All the knowledge systems, scriptures and mantra will be attracted towards the yogi, by Adi Ganapathy’s grace.

Vasiyam or vaseekaram is usually mentioned in the bad connotation, that it is invokes to attract people towards themselves. Men use mantras to attract women towards themselves and women use magical potions and mantra to attract men towards themselves.  Agatthiyar explains the true meaning of vasiyam.  Its actual purpose is to make worthwhile actions fruitful, to acquire the knowledge and attain mantra siddhi.

வசியம் என்பது ஒன்றைத் தன்னிடம் வரச் செய்வது.  பொதுவாக இந்த கர்மம் கெட்ட நோக்கிலேயே பார்க்கப்படுகிறது.  ஆண் பெண்ணைக் கவருவதற்கும் பெண் ஆணைக் கவருவதற்கும், பிறரைக் கவருவதற்கும் பயன்படுவதே வசியம் என்று பொதுவாகக் கருதப்படுகிறது.  முன் பாடலில் கூறிய சிவ சிவ ஓம் றீங் அங் என்ற மந்திரத்தை ஆயிரத்தெட்டு முறை ஓதினால் ஆதி கணபதி ஒருவரிடம் நின்று அவர் காரியங்கள் அறிவு முறைகள், வேதம், சாஸ்திரம், மந்திரம் ஆகியவற்றை அவரை நோக்கி வசியம் செய்வார் என்று அகத்தியர் கூறுகிறார்.
