157. Charya, kriya, yoga and jnana- a summary

Verse157

Translation:
See son, the path of charya is akaara diksha
The young one!  Purity of the body and austerities
See the path of kriya as ukaara diksha
Worship of siva linga, sakthi
Associate with the path of yoga, the makaara diksha
Knowing the nature of prana and the kala, to see the self
It is the direct path, the path of jnana is poorna diksha
The state of niradhara svaroopa, the flame.

Commenntary:
Agatthiyar explains the four steps of charya, kriya, yoga and jnana here.  Charya is external disciplines.  Agatthiyar calls it the akaara diksha.  It is external disciplines such as purity of body and anushtana or austerities that are followed.  Kriya is the ukaara diksha.  It is inner disciplings and prayer.  Yoga is the makaara diksha.  It is knowing the nature of prana, the nature of kala or first limitation due to vidya tattva.  Crossing this step one perceives the self.  The fourth step, jnana or wisdom is poorna diksha.  One attains the niradhara svaroopa or unsupported form, one that has no basis.  It is the state of flame, light of consciousness.

156. Charya.. by kechari's grace

Translation:
The singular entity
Knowing about the singular entity listen about one,
The good one! With steadfastness
Holding the vasi that dances so,
The truthful charya, kriya, yoga
And the ancient jnana, the four, son
Those who have experienced will attain moksha
Due tho the lady, anda kechari,
See the path of charya, the origin.

Commentary:
Vedantanta marga recommends the four step path of charya, kriya, yoga and jnana.  Tamil Siddha philosophy is Vedanta Siddhantha.  It has, as it basis, Vedanta.  Any Agama based system recommends the four steps of charya, kriya, yoga and jnana.  Agatthiyar says that those practice these four steps will definitely attain moksha.  He tells Pulatthiyar to hear about charya, the first step, with the grace of Sakthi, the lady Kechari.

The term Kechari needs further explanation here. Siva’s Sakthi is Chit Sakti or the power of consciousness.  Her substates are Kechari, Gochari, dikchari and bhuchari.  Kechari is the power that limits the universal consciousness into limited consciousness.  Because of her Siva becomes Jiva.  She is associated with the state of kaivalya.  Gochari is associated with anthakarana.  She causes limitation in perception.  She is associated with kaarana sarira or causal body and iccha.  Dikchari is associated with senses, the next step in limitation.  She is associated with sukshma sarira or subtle body, madhyama speech and jnana.  Bhuchari is associated with the gross world, the external objects.  She is associated with sthula sarira or gross body, vaikari speech and kriya.

Thus, moving from Chith Sakthi to bhuchari is moving from subtle to gross.  Hence, Agatthiyar is saying that one should learn about charya with the power of Kechari, the first sakthi who causes manifestation, limitation and the last step before becoming chith sakthi.

155. Emergence of Tattva and taatvika

Verse 155

Translation:
See son, all the worlds within Param.  The kootthu (movement)
The merciful action is the truthful vasi,
When the vasi joins with the fire (of kundalini)
The true five elements (bhuta) occurred
The five other categories emerged so
The prolific principles as 96
The insentient entity (jada) with force
Hear about one of the rules of Vedanta.

Commentary:
Agatthiyar says that all the manifested are within Param.  Param is the state of Supreme that initiates manifestation.  He says the movement of the worlds is due to vaasi or life force.  The five true bhuta types are the five Siva tattva or Siva, Sakthi, Sadasiva, Isvara and Suddha vidhya.  Agatthiyar calls them “nijam” as they are untainted by asuddha maya.
The paraparam mentioned in the previous verse indicates the unmanifested state of the Divine while the Param referred to here represents the state just before manifestion.  The five Siva, Sakthi etc emerge from Param.  Thus, all the manifestations are contained within the Param.

All the categories of five, the elements, their qualities or thanmatra, five karmendriya, jnanendriya etc were created from the five siva tattva.  Thus the total number of principles became ninety six.  We have already seen what these 96 are.

For those who missed it before- 96=36+60.  36- tattva and 60 thaatvika or derivatives of tatva.  36 tatva are 5 siva tatva, 7 vidya tatva including purusha (kala, kaala, raga, vidya, niyati, maya and purusha), and 24 atma tattva- 5 elements, 5 tanmatra, 5+karmendriya and jnendriya and 4 modifications of mind(manas, buddhi, chittham and ahamkara).

The 60 tattvika emerged from the 36 tattva.  They are:
From earth- hair, bone, skin, nerves, flesh (5)
Water- saliva/urine/chile, blood, semen, brain, marrow (5)
Tejas- hunger, sleep, sex, fear, laziness (5)
Air- walking, running, remaining, sleeping and getting up (5)
Akasa- hatred (krodha), greed (loba), desire (moha), pride (madha) and jealousy (maascharyam) (5)
Ten nadi- idai, pingalai, sushumna, gandhari, atthi, asvani, aalam, purusha, sootham, singuvai(10)- they occur from earth principle.
Ten types of vital air- prana, apana, udhana, samana, vyana- due to a combination of tejas and vayu (teyuvayu), nagan, koorman, kirikaran, devadatthan, dhananjayam (10)- they are (bhuta vayu). They are the dynamic aspects of air principle.
Three desires (edanai)- arttha edanai, ulaga edanai and putra edanai (3). They contain the dynamic aspect of akasa.
Vak- vachanam, gamanam, visargam, anandham, aadhanam (5)
Three gunas- raajasam, taamasam and saathvikam (3) from the dynamic aspect of prakriti.
Four types of vaak- paishanthi, madhyama, vaikari, sukshma (4) due to bindhu.

All these constitute the jada or our body.

154. Ravi was offered to surya and mathi to chandra..

Verse 154

Translation:
The Ravi was offered to Surya
The mathi was offered to Chandra
The heat, jyothi, Son,
Was offered to the great light of the world
Becoming equivalent to the Param
It glistens like the light of the stars
For those who know about the prana
Merged with the Paraparam with grace.

Commentary:
Ravi refers to prana moving in the pingala nadi.  It also refers to exhalation. Mathi refers to prana flowing in the ida nadi as well as inhalation.  These nadis are also called surya Chandra respectively.  This is the idea behind saying that God’s eyes are the Chandra surya (Chandra suryau cha netre).  These nadi end at ajna. The heat and jyothi referred to next corresponds to agni, the fire of kundalini.  This, Agatthiyar says, was offered to the light of the world.  The world is brought into awareness by kundalini shakthi.
When the appropriate breath is offered to its respective nadi and brought to a balance the person reaches elevated state of consciousness which results ultimately in the state of Param.  Aatthiyar says that those who know this fact about the prana will merge with Paraparam or the Supreme Divine.

153. Bhuta samharam in pinda

Verse 153

Translation:
While go to the fully complete after ascent
How can I describe it!  Pritvi principle for Brahman
The air principle for Maheswara- were offered.
Siva Sivaa!  The akasha principle
Collecting it and offering the universes
Son, I told you about everything
Offering it to Sadasivam
Listen about the fully complete knowledge.

Commentary:
In the previous verse Agattthiyar described the action of the rishi, muni and devas.  They attain dissolution through kundalini yoga.  As their raise their consciousness through the different cakras the various principles are offered to the deities responsible for that particular cakra.  The earth principle is offered to Brahman, The air principle to Maheswara and the akasha principle to Sadasiva.  This means that the water principle was offered to Vishnu and the fire principle to Rudra.  This is the way in which the elements attain laya in the microcosm.

152. Fate of Muni, rishi and devas

Verse 152

Translation:
The rishi, muni and deva who remain fully complete
Will see the substratum by remaining there firmly
Due to the merciful effulgent divine vision of the Cause
Will remain in Siva nishtai, the yoga
In the earth that has adorned the worlds
Remain with devotion and go to Param
Remaining in that state with awareness
Will ascend after experiencing the truthful fully complete.

Commentary:
In the previous verse Agatthiyar talked about the macro scale and how Vishnu’s lifespan ends.  In this verse he talks about the rishi, muni and devas.  These souls belong to the class of vijnanakala while Vishnu described in the previous verse belongs to the category of pralayakala.  The pralayakala’s life ends after pralaya or dissolution.  The vijnanakala are more evolved souls and this verse describes how and when their life ends.
These souls, through yoga, will become aware of the adhara or the substratum of everything.  They will remain in Siva nishtai or contemplation of Siva or the supreme truth.  The will do so while remaining in a particular form in this world as this is the karma bhumi or the locus where a particular action can be performed.  In the end they will reach the state of Param, the ultimate state.  This is called paramukthi.

151. Tirumal's yoga nidra and final merging

Verse 151

Translation:
At the time when dissolution was happening
Thirumal will recline on banyan leaf
If that sleep of one crore (years) pass by
The Superior one!  He will slepp on the snake
If the mudra of sleep (yoga nidra) ascends
Perceiving the concealment of self and the space correctly
Without thinking “I” and “they”
He merged in the nadhantha poorna (the terminus of nadhantha)

Commentary:
Agatthiyar talks about the yoga nidra in this verse.  When the sarva samharam or dissolution happens Vishnu will sleep on the banyan leaf and after remaining so in yoga nidra he we attain the distinction-free state of singularity where he will realize the nature of Self and Space.  He will finally merge with the terminus of nadha or primordial sound.  The state of nadha starts manifestation.  Thus, Vishnu or Tirumal will reach the state that preceds manifestation.
