39. Derivatives of fire element

Verse 39

கேளப்பா தேய்வினுட கூறு கேளு

கேள்வியென்ன பசியுடனே நித்திரையுமாகும்

கூளப்பா மைதுனம் பயமுஞ் சோம்பல்

தொகுத்துரைத்த ஐந்துமடா தேய்வின் கூறு

சூரப்பா தேய்வினுட கூறரிந்து

ஆக்கமுடன் தன்னகத்தை மனதாய்ப் பாரு

காலப்பா வலுவரிந்து பார்த்தாயானால்

கலையான வாய்வினுட கூறுதானே

Translation:

Listen son, about the derivative of tejus

It is hunger and sleep

Along with physical relationship, fear and laziness,

These five summarized have components of tejas (fire)

Knowing the part of tejus

If the heart is seen as mind

The breath, if you see its strength

You will see the kalai, the derivatives of air

Commentary:

This verse mentions the five derivatives of tejas or fire element.  They are hunger, sleep, fear, laziness and maithunam or sex.  It is interesting that we call burning desire, burning or scorching hunger, all consuming fear etc.  All these adjectives are applicable to fire which burns, consumes everything!

Agatthiyar will be describing the derivatives of air in the next verse. 

அக்னி அல்லது நெருப்புத் தத்துவத்தின் கூறையுடைய ஐந்தை இப்பாடலில் அகத்தியர் பட்டியலிடுகிறார்.  அவை, பசி, தூக்கம், மைத்துனம் அல்லது உடலுறவு, பயம், சோம்பல் என்பவை.  நாம் பொதுவாக இவற்றைப் பற்றிப் பேசும்போது சுட்டெரிக்கும் ஆசை, பொசுக்கும் கோபம், தன்னையே உண்ணும் பசி என்பதுபோன்ற சொற்களைப் பயன்படுத்துவது இதனால்தானோ என்னவோ!  இவையனைத்தும்- ஏரிப்பது, தகிப்பது என்ற அடைமொழிகள், தீக்கே பொருந்தும்.
