263. What is religion?

Verse 263

சொல்லக்கேள் வேதாந்த சாஸ்திரமே செம்மை

சூதென்றலைந்த சமயமெல்லாந் தொல்லை என்று

அல்லக் கேள் திடப்படுத்தல் ஆக்ஷேபமாகும்

அடங்காத சத்துருவால் வியாதி பீடை

விள்ளக்கேள் இதுகளிலே புத்தி மலமற்று

விபரமுடன் இருக்கிறதே சமயமென்பார்

சொல்லக்கேள் சுகதுக்கம் உதிரபந்தம்

செகமாய்கை மான அபிமானம் கேளே

Translation:

Listen to my words. Vedanta sastra is the supreme

Other religions that were sought after are all nothing but deceit and trouble.   

Being so firmly is aakshepam. 

Uncontrollable enemy, disease, bad times

without having the mind afflicted by these

They would say remaining so is religion

Listen to me say this.  Happiness sorrow, relationships

The delusion of the world, honor and admiration, listen.

Commentary:

Agatthiyar seems to be continuing his explanation of aakshepam in this verse.  He seems to be objecting to other religions as those that should be sought after as they are nothing but deceit and trouble.  Agatthiyar is saying that people explain religion as having intellect free of affliction due to disease, enemies and sins. He explains the true meaning of religion in this verse and in the next. 

இப்பாடலில் ஆக்ஷேபம் என்பதன் விளக்கத்தைத் தொடருகிறார் அகத்தியர்.  பிற மதங்கள் தொல்லை, சூது என்று மறுப்பது, திடமாக இருப்பது ஆக்ஷேபம் என்று அவர் கூறுவதைப் போலத் தோன்றுகிறது. இதனை அடுத்து சமயம் என்றால் என்ன என்று அவர் விளக்கத் தொடங்குகிறார்.  சிலர் சமயம் என்றால் வியாதி, விரோதி மற்றும் பீடை ஆகியவற்றால் புத்தி மளமடையாமல் இருப்பது என்று கூறுவார்.  அது சரியில்லை என்று கூறிவிட்டு சமயம் என்றால் என்ன என்று அவர் கூறத் தொடங்குகிறார்.
