272. Dhaana

Verse 272

அறிந்துகொண்டால் ஆர்த்தீக மிதுவேயாச்சு

அருள் பெருகத் தெரிகின்ற பொருளையெல்லாந்

தெரிந்துகொண்டு புண்ணியமாம் காலதோஷஞ்

செயலறிந்து கொடுப்பதுவே தானமென்பார்

அறிந்து நின்று குருச்சொல்லைத் தானுட்கொண்டு

மார்க்கமுடன் முத்தனாய் மனமொன்றாக

சொரிந்துமிக தன்னுடைய சொத்தையெல்லாம்

சுகமாக குருபதத்தில் தியானம் பண்ணே

Translation:

Knowing this is aastheekam.

With grace flowing, all the things that are seen,

Knowing about them, about good actions, time and innate faults-

Knowing their action and offering these
 things is called dhaana (philanthropy)

Knowing this and absorbing Guru’s words within

Remaining as mukhta with the mind focusing.

All the property that one owns-

Offering it happily at the gurupadam, perform dhyana.

Commentary:

Agatthiyar says that aasthikam or spirituality is understanding about the nature of things, time, innate impurities.  Then he describes dhaana the next component of niyama.  He defines it as offering everything to others after knowing the right time, what should be offered and the effects of such offering.  While this is for normal offering in the world the supreme offering is surrendering everything to Gurupadam.  Gurupadam or locus of guru refers to the Divine who remains all pervading.  Offering everything to Gurupadam means considering everything as God's, not have the feeling of possession.  This is the state of muktha who offers the things, their functions and the benefit from their function to the Lord. This is ultimate dhaana.  

பொருள்களின் குணங்கள் காலம், தோஷம் ஆகியவற்றைப் பற்றி அறிந்துகொள்வது ஆர்த்தீகமும் ஆகும் என்று இப்பாடலைத் தொடங்கும் அகத்தியர் அடுத்து தானம் என்றால் என்ன என்று கூறுகிறார். பொருள்களின் தன்மையையும், அவற்றை எப்போது அளிக்க வேண்டும், அவற்றை அளிப்பதால் ஏற்படும் பயன், தோஷம் ஆகியவற்றை அறிந்து அவற்றைப் பிறருக்குக் கொடுப்பதே தானம் என்கிறார் அகத்தியர்.  
இதுமட்டுமல்ல, ஒரு முக்தனாக தனது பொருள்கள் அனைத்தையும் குருபதத்தில் இடுவதும் தானம் என்கிறார் அவர்.  குருபதம் என்பது அனைத்துமாக நிற்கும் இறைவனின் வெளிப்பாட்டு நிலை.  அந்த நிலைக்கு தானம் கொடுப்பது என்பது எந்தப் பொருளும் அவற்றின் செயல்பாடும் அதனால் ஏற்படும் பயனும் தன்னுடையது அல்ல, இறைவனது என்று கருதுவது.  இதுவே உச்ச தானமாகும்.  இதைத்தான் இங்கு குறிப்பிடுகிறார் அகத்தியர்.
