273. Dhaana and Dharma

Verse 273

பண்ணடா சிவனயன்மால் வேதியோர்க்கு

பதிவான அர தேசி பரதேசிக்கும்

நண்ணடா க்ஷத்திரியர் வைசியரோடு

நலம் பெறவே தரணிதன்னில் பிறருக்கெல்லாம்

உண்ணியே தான தர்மஞ் செய்யென்றேதான்

உத்தமனே உலகத்தோர் சொல்வாரையா

துன்னியே தனதேக சுகபோகம்போலே

சுகமாக சகலமெல்லாந் துலங்கக் கேளே

Translation:

Offer your belongings to the priests of Siva, Brahma and Vishnu

To those who belong to your land and foreign land

For Kshatriya and Vaishya

To attain wellness and for all others in the world

Perform dhaana and dharma

The people of the world will say so, the Supreme One!

Considering their comfort as that of oneself

Listen to all others clearly.

Commentary:

Agatthiyar says that one should offering things to priests of Siva, Vishnu and Brahma.  Aradesi and Paradesi are used to referred to wandering mendicants.  Aradesi are those who belong to one’s land or ahadesam.  Paradesi is generally used to refer to a beggar but it actually means “one who belongs to another land”.  Agattthiyar says that one should offer dhaana and dharma.  This is like the terms “aiyam and picchai” that Andal uses in Tiruppaavai.  Aiyam is the dhaanam that is given to those who deserve to receive it.  It may be because of their qualification.  Picchai is dharmam or alms given to another, generally to a beggar.  Besides this Agatthiyar tells Pulathiyar that he should make others comfortable just as how he would like to be.  This is jeeva kaarunyam or mercy towards to other lives.

சிவன், அயன், மால் ஆகியோரது வேதியருக்கும் அரதேசி பரதேசிக்கும் தானமும் தர்மமும் செய்ய வேண்டும் என்கிறார் அகத்தியர்.  அரதேசி என்பது தனது நிலத்தைச் சேர்ந்த சந்நியாசி.  அரதேசி என்பது அகதேசி என்பதன் திரிபு. பரதேசி என்பது வேறொரு நிலத்தைச் சேர்ந்தவர்.  தானம் தர்மம் என்று அகத்தியர் கூறுவது ஆண்டாள் தனது திருப்பாவையில் கூறும் ஐயம் பிச்சை என்ற இரு சொற்களைப் போன்றவை.  ஐயம் என்பது தானம், ஒருவர் அப்பொருளைப் பெறுவதற்குத் தகுதி பெற்றவராக இருந்தால் அதை அவருக்குக் கொடுப்பது.  பிச்சை என்பது பொருளைப் பெற்றுக் கொள்பவரது தராதரத்தைப் பாராமல் கொடுப்பது, இதுவே பிச்சை எனப்படுவது.  இத்துடன் ஒருவர் தனது சுகத்தைப் போல பிறரது சுகத்தையும் எண்ண வேண்டும் என்கிறார் அகத்தியர்.
