133. Nagamuni, Rajamuni

Verse 133

கேளடா நாகமுனி உலகுக்கையா

கிருபையுடன் பாஷை பதினெட்டுஞ் சொன்னார்

வாளடா ராஜமுனி தர்க்க சாஸ்திரம்

மகத்தான வேதாந்த சிப்பி சாஸ்திரங்

காலடா தானறிய மதன சாஸ்திரங்

கலந்த மனு மோகமதால் நன்மை துன்மை

பாளடா அறுசுவையும் அமிர்தங் காட்டி

வங்கமுடன் அன்னமதாற் சார்ந்தார் தானே

Translation:

Listen, Nagamuni, for the sake of the world

Told the eighteen languages

The Rajamuni, gave tarka sastra (logic)

The great Vedanta, the philosophy of pearl

The way of breath, to know about self, and the sastra of physical relationship

The manu who knew this, experienced benefits and troubles

The six tastes, showing the nectar

He became dependent on food, with the boat (body).

Commentary:

Agatthiyar says that another saint, Nagamuni gave the world the eighteen languages and that Rajamuni gave the tarka sastra, Vedanta, the sastra about pearls (one wonders if this is chippi or silpi sastra- the architecture), the sastra of breath and the madhana sastra.  We are not sure if Rajamuni also refers to Nagamuni as Agatthiyar mentioned that he was born in the Kshatriya jathi, the ruling class.  The manu or the soul experienced the dualities- good and bad, six distinct flavors etc due to his dependence on food.  The term vangam means boat.  One wonders whether Agatthiyar is saying that the soul along with the boat, the body, became dependent on food and experienced the world as we know it.

விஷ்ணு முனியை அடுத்து மற்றொரு முனியான நாகமுனி உலகுக்கு பதினெட்டு மொழிகளைக் கொடுத்தார் என்று கூறும் அகத்தியர் ராஜமுனி உலகுக்கு தர்க்க சாத்திரம், சிப்பி சாத்திரம் (அல்லது சில்பி சாத்திரமோ?), மூச்சு சாத்திரம், மதன சாத்திரம் ஆகியவற்றைக் கொடுத்தார் என்கிறார்.  நாக முனி சத்திரிய ஜாதியில் தோன்றியவர் என்று அகத்தியர் கூறியதால் ராஜ முனி என்பதும் நாகமுனியைக் குறிக்கிறதோ என்று தோன்றுகிறது.  இவ்வாறு மனு எனப்படும் ஆத்மா அன்னம் எனப்படும் உணவைச் சார்ந்து நன்மை, தீமை, அறுசுவை என்பவற்றை வங்கம் அல்லது கப்பல் எனப்படும் உடலுடன் அனுபவிக்கலானார் என்று இப்பாடலை முடிக்கிறார் அகத்தியர்.
