Verse 52

ஆச்சப்பா உப்பதுவும் பலந்தான் ஐந்து

அப்பனே மச்சையது பலந்தான் நாலு

நீச்சப்பா ஈரலது பலந்தான் எட்டு

நிசமான அஸ்தியதைச் சொல்லக் கேளு

காச்சப்பா பலமும் நூற்றிருபதாச்சே

கூட்டி நின்ற சேவுடுமந்தான் நாழியாகும்

பேச்சப்பா பித்தமது படிதான் காலாம்

பலமான சுக்கிலந்தான் அரைக்காலாகும்

Translation:

Yes, son, the salts in the body are 5 measures

Son, the marrow is 4 measures

The liver is 8 measures

The truthful bone, hear about it

Its measure is 120

The amount of sleshmam (kapha) is one naazhi (1444ml)

The pitha is ¼ padi (341 ml)

The semen is 1/8 padi (180.5 ml)

Commentary:

Several websites offer ancient Tamil measures.  Suffice to say 1 naazhi is 1444ml which is the same as one padi.

Agatthiyar is listing the weights and measures of various factors in the body.  He mentions the marrow as 4 palam (1 palam=35 g).  These are the ratios if the body’s weight is taken as 1000 palam or 35 kg.  The liver constitutes 280 g, bones 4200 g or 4 kg.  The fluids in the body given in this verse are sleshmam or kapha which is 1444 ml, pittha is 340 ml and semen around 180 ml.

பல வலைத்தளங்கள் தமிழரது அளவைகளைத் தருகின்றன.  இங்கு ஒரு பலம் என்பது முப்பத்தைந்து கிராம் ஒரு நாழி அல்லது ஒரு படி என்பது 1444 மில்லி லிட்டர் என்பதைத் தெரிந்துகொண்டால் போதும். 

இப்பாடலில் அகத்தியர் ஒருவரது உடல் ஆயிரம் பலம் என்று கொண்டால் (முப்பத்து ஐந்து கிலோ) அதில் ஈரல் இருநூற்று என்பது கிராம், எலும்பு நான்கு கிலோ என்றும் உடலில் உள்ள திரவங்களில் கபம் அல்லது சிலேஷ்மம் ஒரு படி என்றும் பித்தம் கால் படி என்றும் விந்து அரைக்கால் படி என்றும் கூறுகிறார்.
