494. Jayaneer

Verse 494

Translation:
Water of victory (jayaneer)
The ruddy fire of blood which attained vigor
Climbing up, with the mind unwavering
Seek it,  Listen to the essence of it.
Adding the thurusu(air principle) and savveeram (the prana) together
Along with the menthol
The green civet- adding all the four
Grinding them and placing them in the porcelain
The water of victory (jayaneer) will secrete/

Commentary:
Jayaneer or water of victory is the fluid that secretes from lalata.  The blood becomes hot.  The mind remains unwavering.  The thurusu and savveeram are the breath and the prana that rides on it.  The menthol corresponds to consciousness, civet to muladhara.  These are brought together and placed at the vishuddhi.  Then jayaneer secretes.

493. anda pindam or the form with universal body

Verse 493

Translation:
The anda pinda became the earth and sky
It became all the mobile and immobile
Those who did not see the form of the sky
They started talking about it
The body soul complex- as the truth
Those who do not see the truth, the wisdom path
Adorn various garbs
And roam around like a mad dog.

Commentary:
The andapinda or the supreme form, the supreme body described in the previous verse appears as the earth, the sky and as all the living and nonliving entities.  Thus, everything is the supreme in its state with a form.  Those who do not know this soul body complex, the soul being the Divine and the body being the manifested universe or the soul and body complex of the divine, the andapinda form talk about it variously.  They adorn various garbs like saints, philosophers and ritualists and roam around like a mad dog, mouthing empty talks.

492. supreme state

Verse 492
Translation:
Can live remaining as saumyam
Considering the great universes as Self
Can rule as the subtle origin
Like the Adi Para jnana veli Jyothi  (the original supreme space and effulgence of parajnana)
Can adorn, attaining the suddha sittha sukham (bliss of pure consciousness)
Can glow like the mani makuta jyothi (the crown jewel effulgence)
Do not consider these higher (states) as pasa
The universe (andam) is vedantic body (Vedanta pinda)

Commentary:
Agatthiyar describes the supreme state in this verse.  He calls it as Saumyam, the antharanga moolam, adi parajnanaveli jyoti, suddha chitta sukham and mani makuta jyothi.  He clarifies that this state is not pasa, it is a pure state of Vedanta, the terminus of knowledge, the state of remaining as Self with awareness.  He also explains that the macrocosm or andam is the Vedanta pindam or the body of the state that precedes knowledge.

491. Pati, pasu, pasa

Verse 491

Translation:
The locus, the Lord, is the Para svaroopa
The pasu, the vaasi is the leg/air
The part that was fate became the house
Knowing the house, if yoga is performed, stopping the breath/establishing the leg
The triple flames remain as one
If the state of their dance is seen in kecharam
The delusion, the madhi will be exhausted
Can live as the faultless effulgence.

Commentary:
The three entities pati, pasu and paasa form the central theme of saiva philosophy.  Pati refers to the Lord, pasu the soul and paasa the attachment.  This attachment can be towards the Pati when it grants liberation, and when it is towards worldly things it binds the pasu to the world.  The mahavakhya tat tvam asi represents this.  Tat or that means the Pati, tvam or thou means the soul and asi is the means through which the pasu becomes pati.  Here Agatthiyar says that the pati is the para svaroopa or the Divine.  It is the prapancha prana sakthi.  The pasu or the limited soul is the prana sakthi in the body.  This is the vaasi or air principle in the body which is used by the prana as its vehicle.  The pasa is the fate which is the locus where the prana remains.  This refers to both the body and the supreme space or vetta veli.  One show know this and performs kumbaka or cessation of breath.  Then the prana will remain within without going in and out.  It will remain in perfect harmony with the prapancha prana sakthi.  Then the three flames of sun, moon and fire will remain together and dance in kecharam.  One of the meanings for charam is frontier.  Kecharam is ka+e+ charam which means the extreme of ka or space and e is sakthi.  Thus it refers to the supreme space as well as the pinda akasa or the body.  The frontier of limited existence as the body is the ajna chakra.  The frontier of supreme space is the peru veli or supreme space.  Then all the delusions of limitedness disappear and the yogin lives as the faultless effulgence.

Agatthiyar describes the difference between jyothi or effulgence and sudar or flame in his work, nadhantha saram.  He says that jyothi is Siva while the flame is sakti.  Jyothi refers to effulgence, the great light.  Sudar or flame refers to fire in its form.  Thus jyothi refers to the formless state of the Divine while flame refers to its state with a form.  When he says that one can remain as faultless effulgence Agatthiyar is referring to the formless state or the origin.

490. Mother Sivajyothi

Verse 490

Translation:
Adding them and melting them together
Siva sivaa!  How can I describe the golden brilliance!
The Mother, Sivajyothi, with supreme purity
Worshipping with fully complete mind
As the flame which is the king of the soul
Having interest in Sivayoga, daily,
Parthibha!  If you remain as fully complete
You can get submerged in the poornam.

Commentary:
In the previous verses Agatthiyar mentioned the control of the mind, consciousness, breath and the energy and directing towards various chakra.  He also mentioned about the downpour of divine nectar.  In this verse, he talks about a sincere prayer that should accompany the previously mentioned processes.  He says that the yogin should worship Sakthi, the Sivajyothi mother, as the ruler of the soul and remain in the poorna state performing siva yogam.   The fully complete or poornam state is turiya, the fourth state of consciouness.  The mind is focused on sakthi and consciousness is immersed in the turya state.

489. Gold lead

Verse 489

Translation:
The golden lead
Make the “man seelai” firmly
Siva sivaa!  If you place it in the heat and examine it
The center, the golden lead
One for ten- brass,
Place it and see it
My guru told me very well,
Holding the hand (kai) so, melting it
Add the four for one of silver.

Commentary:
Agatthiyar has titled the verses as golden lead.  Gold corresponds to muladhara, lead corresponds to svadhistana.  Thus, the verse talks about processing the principles represented by these two chakras.  He says the golden lead is centered.  This means the principles are located to the middle nadi, sushumna.  It also means the centering in pranayama, the madhya state.  The fire, again, is the kundalini.  Brass corresponds to the fire.  He uses the term “patthukkonru” which generally translates to one tenth proportion.  Here it means “killing the ten” here the ten may be the ten types of vital breaths, the ten senses- 5 karmendriya, 5 jnanendriya, that is killing the dependence on the senses for knowledge, or 5 elements and 5 of their subtle qualities which cause the limitation.  These are killed by the fire of kundalini.

Agatthiyar is referring to his guru Murugan or Siva in this verse.  Kai which means hand in Tamil has two meanings. It may refer to pranayama and mudras.  “ai” refers to the state of holding everything with and having the primal energy, the prana sakthi.  Four to one silver- silver corresponds to the moon and thus this expression means adding the mind or manas which is one of the four- manas, buddhi, chittham and ahamkaram.

488. Another alchemical method

Verse 488

Translation:
Yes son, another alchemical method
My beloved Pulatthiya!  Listen to this
The aridhaaram and jati lingam
The pleasurable pori kaaram savveeram
Direct it son, to the five types, locking it
Grinding it carefully with the essence of the lotus
On a golden plate
Make an armor, son.

Commentary:
This method is similar to the previous verses except the fact that Agatthiyar tells Pulathiyar to make a coating on the golden plate.  As we saw before, the golden plate coreresponds to the muladhara chakra.  The aridhaaram, jati lingam, pori kaaram, savveeram and kamalarasam are as mentioned before.
