278. What is Sivam?

Verse 278

நோக்கென்று சொன்னதிலே நோக்கு நோக்கு

நோக்கினதால் மதியென்று கொள்ளலாகும்

வாக்கென்றும் குருசொன்ன மந்திரத்தை செவித்து

மார்க்கமுடன் நின்றதால் சிவமதாச்சு

போக்கென்று மனதற்று வேதாந்தம் பார்த்து

புத்தியுடன் பூரணமாய் தள்ளியெல்லாந்

தூக்குகின்ற மோனமுற்றால் சிவமுமாச்சு

சுகமாக மற்றதெல்லாஞ் சிவமல்ல பாரே

Translation:

Focus and see that which I told you to see

If you see so it will considered “mathi”

Chanting the mantra that Guru uttered

If remained in the right path it became sivam

Driving the mind and remaining free of it, seeing the Vedanta

Pushing everything away completely with discrimination

If silence that lifts is adorned, it became sivam

With pleasure.  Everything else is not Sivam, see it.

Commentary:

Agatthiyar tells Pulatthiyar to remain seeing the poornam or Divine as he advised before.  If Pulathiyar does so then it is considered to be the state of sivam or wisdom.  If he chants the mantra that guru gave him, remain free of mind, push everything away with discrimination realizing their nature with the help of Vedanta and become speechless then he would have reached the state of Sivam.  Everything else is not sivam.  Agatthiyar teaches Pulatthiyar this truth. 

பூரணத்தை நோக்கு என்று முந்தைய பாடலை முடித்த அகத்தியர் இப்பாடலில் அதுவே மதி என்பது என்கிறார்.  அத்துடன் குரு கொடுத்த மந்திரத்தை செபித்து, மனத்தை விலக்கி, வேதாந்தம் தந்த அறிவினால் மற்றைவையனைத்தியும் ஒதுக்கி மோனம் உற்றால் அதுவே சிவமாகும்.  மற்றவையனைத்தும் சிவமல்ல என்கிறார் அகத்தியர்.  இதனால் சிவம் என்பது ஒரு நிலை என்பது புரிகிறது.
