117. Siva as column of flame

Verse 117

காணவே உச்சிமுடி தன்னை மைந்தா

கருவான பிரமனுமே தேடித்தேடி

தோணவே காணாமல் வந்தாரப்பா

சுகமான மாலவரும் ஏனமாகிப்

பூணவே பூமிபா தாளஞ்சென்று

புத்தியுடன் வைத்தவடிக் காணார்தானே

பேணவே மாலயனுந் தேடித்தேடிப்

பெருகிநின்ற வடிமுடியுங் காணார்பாரே

Translation:

To see the peak the top, son

The essence, Brahma, seeking it greatly

Came back without seeing it

The pleasurable Vishnu, as wild boar

Going to the netherland below the world

With buddhi, did not see the foot

Thus, Mal and Brahma searching greatly

Did not see the head or the foot.

Commentary:

Agatthiyar is describing a puranic episode where Siva remained as a column of fire.  Brahma and Vishnu tried to see his head and foot.  Both of them were not successful in their effot.

Brahma represents manas and Vishnu the buddhi or intellect.  This story indicates that one cannot realize the Divine through mind and intellect.  It is beyond sensual comprehension.

சிவன் ஒளிப்பிழம்பாக நிற்க மாலும் அயனின் அவனது அடியையும் முடியையும் தேடிப்போன புராணக்கதையை இங்கு அகத்தியர் குறிப்பிடுகிறார். பிரம்மா மன தத்துவத்தையும் விஷ்ணு புத்தி தத்துவத்தையும் குறிக்கின்றனர்.  இதனால் இறைவனை மனத்தாலும் புத்தியாலும் உணரமுடியாது என்று காட்டப்படுகிறது.
