538. Where can we "see" the definitude?

Verse 538

Translation:
To see the definitude
Where is the eye, where is the mouth, where is the mouth,
Remain and see beyond the macrocosm
He will remain below the earth, see
If you see the manner in which (he) stood to planting it firmly
Where is the world, what/where is you and what is me?
When looked carefully it became all darkness
The sight of the speechless subtlty.

Commentary:
The “nicchayam” or definitude mentioned in the last verse is being described here.  Agatthiyar says that Supreme Being or Param remains beyond the universe and below the other.  In other words, he is saying that the Divine is beyond the manifested universes.  If one realizes this then one will know that there is no separate world or living beings.  Everything is Param.  It will appear as darkness or indescribable.  It is the mauna or the entity beyond sound.  It is the supreme subtlety.

537. Expansion on Siva jnana

Verse 537

Translation:
The world, is the life of maya
Remaining in the great life here
Without knowing the truthful definitude
As the space and light
As the Param and that Param is self
As Sakti and sivam
The creed that cannot be described
Without thinking about these, they will not know the definitude.

Commentary:
Agatthiyar described siva jnana in the previous verse.  There, he described the knowledge that one should know thoroughly.  Here he elaborates on that knowledge.  One should know that the worldly life is nothing but a play of maya.  The supreme is space and light, It is beyond the material world, it is the light of awareness.  It is the Param and that param is also the self.  That param became Sivam and Sakti or passive and active entities, those that are beyond verbal description.  Only the param is satyam, the unchanging, the definitude.  Everything else is “not nicchayam”.  Everying undergoes change.  So there is nothing in this world that we can definitely talk about as “this”.  Hence, Agatthiyar says that only the Supreme Param is “nicchayam”.  People do not know this knowledge or the “definitude”.

536. Siva jnanan in a nutshell

Verse 536

Translation:
See son, Sivajnana is
All the lifeforms in the world, including crops
You should see like yourself,
You should remain honestly as truth
All the kala jnana
You should perceive them completely with interest
Seeing the terminus of Merugiri
The entity that was not described will become clear.

Commentary:
Agatthiyar explains Siva jnana or wisdom of sivam in a nutshell.  It is considering all lifeforms as oneself, remaining truthful and honest, perceiving all the knowledge as nothing other than the Supreme being who is fully complete.  Then one will see the terminus of Meru, the terminus of distinct existence.  Then, even the knowledge that cannot be described verbally will become clear.  This is siva jnanam, the supreme wisdom.

535. Types of people to avoid

Verse 535

Translation:
Who is to be pushed away, listen son!
Those who follow the religion which is not associated with self.
Those who do not watch the heart that remains within
Those who do not seek the siva sakti padham
Those who think they are the hero, those who do not have good qualities/realization
Those who do not perceive nadhantha vedam
Need not talk to them
See the jyothimaya siva jnanam

Commentary:
Agatthiyar is listing the types of people that one should avoid.  He says that those who follow religions that do not have self as the primary focus, those who do not turn within, those who do not seek the higher states of consciousness, those who have the sense of self-importance, those who have either wrong notions or bad qualities and those who do not “see” the knowledge or awareness beyond the nadha state should be avoided.  These are people who whirl in worldly experiences, worldly pleasures and minor benefits. Seek jyothimaya siva jnanam.

534. Watch the heart/mind

Verse 534

Translation:
See son, if you watch the mind (heart) every day
If you see with devotion and purity
The heart
Will mature,
The amrita bodham that nurtures mercy
The overwhelming bodham (will ensue), go through yoga
Remain as the entire universe
Push away sankalpa and vikalpa

Commentary:
Agatthiyar says that the mind or heart should be watched carefully with devotion and purity.  Then it will mature and the bodham or awareness will occur.  This bodham will make the soul realize right and wrong.  It will nurture mercy.  So a person interested in enjoying the bodham should perform yoga.  He will enjoy all pervasive state.  The person will not be affected by sankalpa and vikalpa.  Sankalpa is having intense desire to do something.  Vikalpa is imagination, thinking about something as something else.  Both, sankalpa and vikalpa are due to the play of mind.  Hence, a soul wishing to transcend the mind will avoid both sankalpa and vikalpa.

533. After reaching the shores climb the mountain

Verse 533

Translation:
Remain in the path, with humility
After reaching the shores (overcoming it) go to the mountain
This place is heaven, heaven,
In the aadhi andha sorgam, going through the eye of grace
Go so, in the life of Sivayogam
Attaining all the riches (sakala saubhagyam)
Remain with the world as long as required
Remain until interested, see the heart.

Commentary:
Agatthiyar says that after knowing the path and following it, becoming an expert in it one should climb the mountain.  Mountain signifies peak of certain principles.  One has to clear the dregs or impurities first, attain the right state before attempting to reach the peak of any principle.  Otherwise the principle will overwhelm the yogin.  For example if one attains siddhis before removing his ego and desire one will use them for personal gain and fall into an abyss.  The situation will become worse than before.  Hence Agatthiyar is saying that one should climb the heights after reaching the shores.  The mountain also refers to Kailaya or the supreme state.  It is the state of supreme bliss.  Agatthiyar calls this the heaven.  It is the “aadhi andha sorgam” or the heaven of beginning and end.  This is laya.  This is the life of siva yogam.  After reaching this supreme state the soul remains in the world enjoying all the riches, as jiva mukta until it decides to give it up.  At that point its material existence ceases.

This verse reminds us of Bhishma and his waiting on the arrow bed to leave the earth.

532. Chendooram and its benefits

Verse 532

Translation:
Son, hear after consuming it and perfecting your mind,
In the navalokha (nine metals/nine worlds)
If a small portion of chendooram touches it
All the impurities will go away, one can become hamsa (annam)
If the emergence of aruna giri is witnessed
One can play the magical accomplishments (sitthu)
Serving the servitor of servitor
Remain in the sivayoga marga, with purity.

Commentary:
By Agatthiyar aiya’s grace the word chendooram throws in another meaning.  The aru padai veedu or six encampments of Lord Murugan is well known among those who are interested in kundalini yogam.  Nakkirar in his Tirumurugatruppadai describes them in an order beginning with Tirupparam kundram.  This site lights the fire in the muladhara.  Next site is Tiruchendoor which corresponds to the svadhistana chakra and the sense of reason.  Palanai, the third sacred site corresponds to manipurakara chakra.  It corresponds to will power. The fourth site Swamimalai corresponding to the anahata is the center of direct cognition.  Tiruttani corresponds to the vishuddhi chakra and divine love. Pazhamudircholai corresponds to ajna chakra and divine sight.

Thus, the chendooram that Agatthiyar describes here may mean the power of reasoning which purifies the nine worlds or the chakras.  Navalokham means both, nine worlds and nine metals.  The power of reason will help the yogin lose his innate impurities and become hamsa or a supreme yogi.  Hamse or annam in Tamil is a mythical bird which is said to possess the quality to separate milk and water.  This indicates its discriminator power.  Hence Agatthiyar says that the person will become annam.  The aruna giri is the emergence of awareness, higher consciousness.  This will grant the capacity to perform sitthu or magical acts.  However, one who has this capacity should possess humility.  Hence. Agatthiyar says that one should server the server of server.  He recommends that one should remain in the path of sivayoga performing these actions.
