Verse 522

சூதமணி வேதை

காணவே சூதத்தின் கட்டுச் சொல்வேன்

கருணைவளர் சூதமது பலந்தான் ஒன்று

பூணவே கல்வத்தில் இட்டுக்கொண்டு

புத்தியுடன் வெற்றிலைச் சாரு செங்கல் தூளும்

பேணவே மத்தித்து கழுவிப் போட்டு

பிலமான ரவிதனிலே காய்ந்த பின்பு

தோணவே வழலை பச்சை துருசு கூட்டி

சுத்தமுடன் நாத விந்தை விட்டு ஆட்டே

Translation:

Rasamani alchemy

I will tell how to solidify mercury (arsenic compound)

Take a measure of mercury/arsenic

Grind it with awareness with betel juice and brick powder

Centering and washing it

After drying in the sun

Add vazhalai, green thurusu

And grind with nadha bindhu.

Commentary:

As the idea behind the commentary is to discuss the philosophical interpretations behind these verses the following verses that describe the “soodhamani vedai” or alchemy of mercury.  The mercury is solidified through addition of various products that confer different properties to it.  The resultant product is called “rasamani” or bead of essence.  Rasa means paadharasam or mercury.  The term paadha rasam also means essence of the sacred feet, that of the Supreme Being.  Mecury is given this term to indicate that it confers various benefits similar to those that the Lord confers.

The procedure described in this section is follows:

One measure of mercury with a little arsenic (soodham) is ground in a mortal along with betel juice, brick powder and dried in the sun.  To this is added “vazhalai”, green thurusu and ground again with the pure nadha and bindhu.  Nadha bindhu are complementary items such as tamarind and vediyuppu a type of salt.

The philosophical interpretation is as follows: 

Sootham is semen or the rasa where the prapancha prana sakti is stored in the body.  Sootham represents the space principle in the body.  To this is added inhalation and exhalation.  They are then centered or brought to the sushumna nadi.  They are mixed together and dried in the surya mandala.  To this is added vazhalai which is also space principle, the macrocosm.  Green thurusu is air principle especially the apana vayu.  These are combined with nadha and bindu. 

This may be the apana yoga.

சூதம் என்பது பாதரசமும் சவ்வீரமும் சேர்ந்தது.  பாதரசத்தை சிவனின் துளி என்று சித்தர்கள் அழைக்கின்றனர்.  இறைவனைப் போலவோ அத்துடன் சேர்க்கப்பட்ட பொருளைப் பொருத்து பாதரசம் பல பலன்களை அளிக்கக் கூடியது. 

இப்பாடலில் சூதத்தை வெற்றிலைச் சாறு செங்கல் பொடி ஆகியவற்றுடன் சேர்த்து கல்வத்தில் அரைத்து வெய்யிலில் காயவைக்க வேண்டும்.  அத்துடன் வழலை பச்சை துருசு ஆகியவற்றுடனும் நாதபிந்துக்களுடனும் அரைக்கவேண்டும் என்று கூறப்படுகிறது.  நாத பிந்து என்பது புலி வெடியுப்பு போல ஒன்றையொன்று சேர்ந்த பொருட்கள்.

இதன் தத்துவப் பொருள்: சூதம் என்பது ஆகாயத் தத்துவம்.  உடலில் அது ரசம் அல்லது சுக்கிலம்.  இவ்வாறு பிரபஞ்ச பிராண சக்தி உடலில் சேர்த்து வைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. இத்துடன் உள்மூச்சு வெளி மூச்சு எனப்படும் பிராணனைச் சேர்த்து மத்தித்தல் அல்லது சுழுமுனையில் ஏற்றல் என்ற செயலைப் புரிய வேண்டும். அவற்றை சூரியமண்டலம் ஏற்றி அவற்றுடன் வழலை துருசு எனப்படும் பிரபஞ்ச பிராணன் மற்றும் வெளியைச் சேர்த்து அவற்றுடன் நாத பிந்துக்களைக் கூட்டவேண்டும் என்று பொருள்.
