சோதி எனும் மனோன்மணியைத் தியானஞ் செய்து

சுகமான சௌமிய சாகரத்தைப் பாட

ஆதிஎனுங் கணபதியும் வல்லபையுங்காப்பு

அரசான பிரம்மனொடு சரஸ்வதியுங்காப்பு

நீதியெனும் மாலுடனே லட்சுமியுங் காப்பு

நின்றிலங்கும் ருத்திரனும் உருத்திரியுங்காப்பு

ஓதியதோர் மயேஸ்பரனும் மயேஸ்பரியுங்காப்பு

உறுதியுள்ள சதாசிவனும் மனோன்மணியுங் காப்பே

Translation:

Contemplating on Manonmani, the effulgence

To sing the pleasurable Saumya Sagaram

The origin, Ganapathy and Valabhai, for protection

The king, Brahma and Sarasvathi, for protection

The rule, Maal and Lakshmi, for protection

The glorious Rudra and Rudri, for protection

The recited Maheswara and Maheswari, for protection

The firm Sadasiva and Manonmani, for protection.

Commentary:  Saumayam means cool, auspicious, pleasan.  Before embarking on the great endeavor of composing a 1200 verse work, The ocean of auspiciousness, saumya sagaram, Agatthiyar is praying to the deities for protection.  The deities he is invoking are the athipathi or keepers of the five cakra, muladhara, svadhistana, manipuraka, anahatha and vishuddhi.  Ganesha and his consort Vallabhai are the keepers of muladhara. The other deities invoked in this verse are the athipathi of svadhistana, manipuraka, anahata and vishuddhi cakra respectively.  Thus Agatthiyar gives us a clue about the topic in saumya sagaram.  It is about about the cakra and ascent of consciousness. 

சௌமியம் என்றால் ரம்மியமான, குளுமையானது, மனதுக்குகந்தது என்று பொருள்.  ஆயிரத்து இருநூறு பாடல்களைக் கொண்ட சௌமிய சாகரம் என்ற நூலைத் தொடங்கும்முன் அகத்தியர் காப்புச் செய்யுளில் பல தெய்வங்களை வணங்குகிறார்.  அவர் வணங்கும் தெய்வங்கள் நம் உடலில் உள்ள சக்தி மையங்களான சக்கரங்களின் அதிதேவதைகள்.  மூலாதரத்தின் அதிபதி கணபதியும் அவரது சக்தியான வல்லபையும்.  அதே போல் இப்பாடலில் உள்ள பிற தெய்வங்களும் முறையே சுவாதிஷ்டானம், மணிபூரகம், அனாகதம் விசுத்தி ஆகிய சக்கரங்களின் அதிதேவதைகள் ஆவர்.
