521. Everything is five elements

Verse 521

Translation:
Becoming clear about the status and seeing it
There is no tongue that is capable of describing it
That form is the only form, everything other than that
Will be included within it as formless and with form
Without the mind becoming crooked (confused)
Knowing this straight (correctly) directing the mind towards it, Son
The air will not run away, the thejus
Is bodakam.  It will live.  See.

Commentary:
The five elements manifest in this world as the living and non living.  For example the earth principle manifests as the bones, flesh and so on in a body.  The sky principle manifests as anger, greed and other emotions.  Thus, everything in this manifested world, those with form and formless, are various transformations of the five elements. Agatthiyar says that no one is capable of explaining this truth.  If one sees this clearly, without any erroneous undertanding and remains firmly with this thought then the prana will abide in kumbaka and effulgence or bodam ensues.

520. process of acquiring knowledge

Verse 520

Translation:
See son, when examined within
The void, the pritvi became earth
The Appu became water
The thejas became fire
The Vayu became air
The Akasa became Saachari
It became knowledge also
Why fatigue, why depression, see clearly

Commentary:
Agatthiyar is talking about the elements and their corresponding gross forms.  Pritvi is a principle.  Its gross form is earth.  Similarly the gross form of thejas is fire and so on.  The five elements in their subtle and gross forms create the sakti of experiences- the kechari or inner sky of consciousness, gochari or the sensual experiences, dikchari or outward movement of senses in different directions and bhuchari the various objects in the world.   The verse contains the term saachari leading to the conjecture that it includes all the four mentioned above.  Agatthiyar says that is the “arivu” or knowledge.   A soul attains knowledge due to all these four. The sense organs sense the external objects through the senses and consciousness experiences them.

519. Paasam or attachment

Verse 519

Translation:
That which is seen and adorned are pasam
Feeling confused and swallowing are pasam
Nurturing and blabbering are pasam
Expanding and contracting are pasam
Adorning and praising are pasam
Knowledge and rules are pasam
That which occurs and contracts are pasam
Remain with purity and see these within.

Commentary:
Agatthiyar describes pasam or attachment in this verse.  Every action, every adorning, every mode of knowledge and stipulation are all attachments.  This shows us that everything that causes accumulation of karma is pasam.

518. Monism

Verse 518

Translation:
This is the way how everything stands
Is there any other that occurred? Son?
From then to now this is the only one (way/manner/entity)
It is that which danced and which abided
It is only one entity which expanded as many
Running greatly it is the one which abided
Seeing this bodham (knowledge) remaining firmly
See it as definititude, as the correct (theory).

Commentary:
Agatthiyar confirms that the Tamil Siddha philosophy is monistic in this verse.  He says that it is only one entity, the Supreme that expanded as several.  It is the only entity that exists, all others are its transformations.  It is the singular entity which acted as many and finally abided in the state of singularity.  This is the bodham, the knowledge, the awareness or chith.  Agatthiyar tells Pulathiyar to remain firmly and see this truth.

517. Dream, maya, desire- three types of perception

Verse 517

Translation:
Went away Son, everything seen became a dream
The entity not seen by the mind, is the truth
Went away, all that truth became maya
The place without speech became nitya/ eternal
All the desires became attachments (pasam)
The desireless desire- it is the witness
To see the sight, of being the witness
There is neither eye nor ear.

Commentary:
Agatthiyar tells us about how everything perceived in the world disappears in the supreme state of darkness.  He lists three things in this verse, the objects that are perceived in this world through the senses, those that are perceived by the mind such as emotions and the ultimate perception.  In the supreme state, the external objects perceived became a dream.  The entities perceived by the mind, even though they are true, they are nothing but products of maya as it is the mind that creates these perceptions. Only the speechless place of the locus that precedes thoughts, the para state, is the eternal state.  The pasa or desire initiates thoughts in the para state that emerge ultimately as words and actions.  The supreme state is that of desireless desire.  The desire here is to remain as a witness of everything.  This state cannot be perceived by any instruments such as the eyes or ears.

516. Darkness

Verse 516

Translation:
See son, holding the place entered with devotion
The place arrived is the space.
If questioned, “Where is the space light?”
The truth, the akasha became darkness
It was in the darkness that birth occurred
The death and dissolution occurred in darkness
See son, all that was seen became verily darkness
The actions of the principles/types became a dream.

Commentary:
Agatthiyar describes the darkness here.  He says that everything is born in the darkness.  Everything dissolves in darkness too.  Even the space light, the akasha is the darkness.  When the soul reaches this darkness all the actions stop, they become a dream and not a reality.

Science talks about dark matter and dark energy.  The darkness that Agatthiyar describes seems to be similar to these concepts.

515. Time, space, speech, Kali the darkspace

Verse 515
Translation
Jnana

The Kali who remained as poornam
Rare, rare, it is wonderful to see
Speech, within the greatly accumulated darkness
It emerged as sun, moon and light
Remaining as light.  Knowing the light, I saw the path
In the path that was seen, travelling merging, the light
With the speech roaming in the dark space
Enter the place of arrival and the place gone/departed

Commentary:
Agatthiyar seems to be talking about time.  He calls her Kali.  She is the darkness from which emerged the lights- the sun and the moon.  Knowing about this light and travelling with the light in the path revealed by it, one goes to the space of darkness.  It is from this space that souls emerge as life forms.  They abide in this space in the end.

The concept of time is closely related to space.  First, there is a movement, an event.  When an event occurs it needs a space where it occurs.  Thus, the primordial stir creates a space where it occurs.  When it occurs there is a time before the event and after the event.  Thus, time is born.  From this we can see that both, time and space are born from the Lord’s spanda or first stir.  Similarly, darkness contains everything within it.  Science explains the concept of color as the rays of light that were not absorbed.  If everything is absorbed, contained within then it appears as black or darkness.  From this darkness emerges light, the rays that were not absorbed.  Thus, the sun and the moon the two light bodies emerge from the primary darkness.  Speech or sound is produced when there is a movement.  Similarly, speech produces movement.  These two abide in the silence which is the primary darkness.   Sound also occurs in space as it is closely linked to movement.  Thus, from the primary darkness emerges lifeforms which are manifestations of various concepts.  In the end the lifeforms abide in the darkness.  Agatthiyar calls the darkness as “pona idam vandha idam”.

The darkness may also represent awareness.  In the primary energy state of para, there is no awareness.  Thoughts emerge as the energy moves through madhyama, pashyanthi and vaikari.  Thus, the primary darkness is the source and the terminus of speech, awareness.   This verse also means the prana in a sense.  The sun and the moon are the pingala and ida.  The darkness is the state where they merge together and remain in sushumna.
