482. Para svaroopa, faultless actions

Verse 482

Translation:
Without the play of '"I" the maya
Where is sankalpa and vikalpa?
When thought out it, by the grace of Guru, the king
That which remains so is Para svaroopa
For the sake of the honey-like aroopa
There is no fault in the several actions for its sake
For the several actions performed by the body
The gold of firm guru dhyana is the truth.

Commentary:
Agatthiyar says that everything is the play of  ahamkara or the I-sense and this is none other than maya.  Sankalpa and vikalpa are a particular thought which precedes an action or termination of an action.  They are mental constructs that arise due to the sense of "I".  This sense of "I" causes limitation.  Among the innate impurities or mala, the ahamkara is the last to be given up.  Without the sense of I a lifeform does not have limited existence.  It becomes all-pervading.
This I sense of the Supreme Reality, its bodham was the cause for the manifested world.  Hence, Agatthiyar says that every action or lack of it is due to the I sense of the Param.  They are forms of Param.  Thus, the manifested universe with all the actions, are forms of the Divine.
This I sense causes the Param or Pati to exist as pasu or the Jiva.  When the Jiva realizes this and performs all the actions for the sake of the Divine, without the feeling of "I" am doing it, "I" am enjoying its fruits then the actions become faultless as it is the I sense of the Divine performing the actions and not the I sense of Jiva.  Thus, the Jiva is freed of the karma due to those actions.  Hence, the Jiva should perform the actions, contemplating on the Ultimate Truth, the Divine, the Guru, the one who removes the darkness of ignorance, the entity that remains as everything.
This method of performing an action for the sake of the Divine with the Divine as the beneficiary is called satvika tyagam, the sacrifice of doership and the beneficiary status.

481. Maya, chendhura bhasma

Verse 481

Translation:
See son, maya is desire and attachment
It will ascend holding on to several sastra
It will flow straight into enchantment
It will remain firmly at the eye brows
It will search for kayadhi karpam (the state, the origin of body)
The karpam will create red ash
The veeram will cause chendoora logam
All these are the play of maya, the force.

Commentary:
This verse explains Agatthiyar’s definition of maya.  It is not the evil force but one that helps the yogin reach the supreme state.  He says that the maya is desire and attachment.  This is the desire to go beyond the confines of time and space.  This process is facilitated by maya, the good force.  This force will search for the “amrita karpam” the dvadasantha.  This karpam will make the yogin reach the state which is the origin of the body, that is, manifestation.  This karpam will cause sendhooram. The word sendhoora logam is interesting.  Generally it is a chemical process of roasting products until they are red.  In Siddha medicine four types of sendhuram are considered important.  They are mruthyunjayam (the products are burnt till they are red), ayam sendhuram (they are cooked in heat until they are red), Chanda maarutha chendhuram (grinding the products and burning them) and ayamveera chendhuram (roasting products until they are red).
While the above look like medicinal preparation they also have a yogic equivalence.  During vasi yoga the fire of kundalini is kindled and the faults or mala are roasted with it. This is similar to ayam veera sendhuram.  In another work Agatthiyar explains veeram as vaasi.  This will make the vaasi or breath flow with great force.  This is the state of sakaakkaal or undying air.  This is similar to the Chanda maarutham.  Maarutham means air, Chanda maarutham means air flowing with great force.  This state makes the prapancha prana harmonize with the prana in the body.  This is not the end stage.  The yogin than deals with ahamkara or the feeling of ‘ayam’.  This is the state explained by the mahavakhya ‘ayam atma’.  This ahamkara or limitedness is removed by repeated contemplation which is the ‘pudam’.  This is the ayam chendhuram.  The next state is the deathless state or mruthyu jayam, victory over death.  Thus, everything in the Siddha marga has an obvious meaning and a hidden meaning. The sendhuram that Agatthiyar is talking about in this verse seems to be referring to the inner meaning.

The maya, the force will follow the methodology listed in the sastra and ascend through the chakra.  It will reach the state of enchantment and remain firmly at the ajna.  It will seek the kayadhi karpam, the amrit from dvadasantha.  This karpam will roast the mala or innate impurities in the body, make them into chendhura parpam.  It will casue ayam veera chendhura logam.  Agatthiyar says that all these are the play of maya.

480. Desire, attachment

Verse 480

Translation:
Desire and attachment
Desires, all the desires are attachments
Araharaa!  For sacrifice, an attachment,
Going beyond the sound with sivaya,
To see the wise mind/moon of wisdom, the truth,
(People) Examining several books in languages
Going to the desire of ashtanga
Performing puja, the agama
They entered the dangerous maya, See.

Commentary:
Agatthiyar says that all desires are attachments including the desire to experience the mathi of wisdom, the truth.  For this goal people perform sacrifices, an attachment, go beyond the desire with sivaya, read several books, perform ashtanga yoga, puja that are agama and enter the maya.

479. Aasai- desire

Verse 479

Translation:
See son, life is desire, desire
Taking up many jobs, desire, desire
Remaining austere, desire, desire
Sivayoga, the nishtai, desire, desire
See son, ascending the vaasi through sakala kalaa
Knowing the eye and perceiving is also desire, desire
Associate with it.  Meeting the kayadhi karpam
And remaining with it is also desire.

Commentary:
Pasu, pati and paasam are the three primary triad in Saiva siddhantha.  Pasu refers to jiva, pati to Isava and paasam is the attachment which binds the jiva to the world.  If this paasam is transformed into interest in the Absolute, then pasu becomes pati.  Agatthiyar describes the nature of this paasam which he calls as desire or aasai.
In this context one is reminded of the siddha expression, “aasaiyai arumin aasaiyai arumin Isanodaayinum aasaiyai arumin” In other words, cut away desire, cut away desire, if it is with the Isa cut the desire. Aasai or attachment brings about the distinction of the desired, the desire and the one who desires.  By cutting away the desire this multiplicity is cut away and the soul reaches the state of singularity.
Agatthiyar says that worldly life is desire, taking up posts, performing austerities and even sivayoga is desire.  The yoga of raising the vaasi, transcending the distinction-causing kalai, knowing the eye of supreme perception and the act of perception is also desire.  He says that even the interest or will to meet the karpam, the primal cause of body and remaining with it is desire.

478. Gold, copper, silver

Verse 478

Translation:
When seen together the gold becomes copper
Siva sivaa the gold and copper
Seeing them well, ten to one in silver
Give it carefully, blow and see
The air in the fruit, when blown and seen
The kailasa meru became golden
Seeing the adorned gold, you
Will live as poornam. See.

Commentary:
In the previous verse Agatthiyar said that when the gold is added to the arsenicum rubrum then it will become copper.  The arsenicum corresponds to the chakra, the gold to manipurakam.  Now let us see why svadhishtana is gold.

Planet
Chakra
Metal
Sun/moon
Ajna
Copper/bronze /
Budha (mercury)
Vishuddhi
Brass/
Sukra
Anahata
Silver
Mangala (Mars)
Manipuraka
Copper
Guru (Jupiter)
Svadhishtana
Gold
Sani (Saturn)
Muladhara
Iron
Rahu and ketu

Lead, lead and earth

Now, we shall see the verse.  The gold coreponds to svadhishtana chakra, the copper corresponds to manipuraka, the golden copper corresponds to ajna.  By toasting the adhara with the fire of kundalini, at the muladhara, the svadishtana is also brought in.  This, then rises to the manipuraka the copper.  Now adding one of ten is prana, one the ten vital breaths.  The prana is blown with force with force at the vishuddhi. Now the fruit is the lalata, siddhas call the amrit that oozes from there as the milk of mango, maangaai paal.  When the above process is continued the kailasa meru or the whole of sushumna will glow like golden copper.  When the yogin reaches this stage he will like as poornam.

477. Further processing of medicated oil

Verse 477

Translation:
Listen son, in the medicated oil
Add the civet along with camphor
Adding the powder to the oil
It will become watery
Listen, in the water that is nonexistent
Adding the arsenicum rubrum wash and toast it
Son, melting it
Join it to the gold and see.

Commentary:
Agatthiyar completes the instructions of the previous verse.  The medicated oil is the bindu.  Civet is a fragrance popularly used in worship rituals.  This corresponds to the earth principle (fragrance) and the muladhara chakra.  Agatthiyar says add these to the camphor.  The word he uses is “soodan”.  This also means “one who adorns” and thus corresponds to the jiva whose characteristic is consciousness.  When these are joined with the energy from the semen then the semen becomes watery.  This is then added to “manosilai” or arsenicum rubrum.  Manosilai is popular in alchemy.  Some of its other names are red “aridharam” vaani, naanmukhan devi.  So we can see that it corresponds to the adhara.  This is confirmed by the next line where he says wash it and toast it.  This will melt the adhara and it is joined to the gold, the svadishtana.
