278. What is Sivam?

Verse 278

Translation:
Focus and see that which I told you to see
If you see so it will considered “mathi”
Chanting the mantra that Guru uttered
If remained in the right path it became sivam
Driving the mind and remaining free of it, seeing the Vedanta
Pushing everything away completely with discrimination
If silence that lifts is adorned, it became sivam
With pleasure.  Everything else is not Sivam, see it.

Commentary:
Agatthiyar tells Pulatthiyar to remain seeing the poornam or Divine as he advised before.  If Pulathiyar does so then it is considered to be the state of sivam or wisdom.  If he chants the mantra that guru gave him, remain free of mind, push everything away with discrimination realizing their nature with the help of Vedanta and become speechless then he would have reached the state of Sivam.  Everything else is not sivam.  Agatthiyar teaches Pulatthiyar this truth.

277. Siva Mathi

Verse 277

Translation:
Even if the maya and other come
My son! While remaining in this world
If remained in the state of Siddhantha
It will be considered as remaining in the right state.
If the world is left and clarity occurs
The supreme one!  They say it is “mathi” (knowledge)
Remaining in the Vedanta state truthfully
Look at the guru, the Poornam with focus.

Commentary:
Agatthiyar is talking about sivamathi or right attitutde.  He says that even if maya and other delusions occur is a person continues to remain in the world in the state of Siddhantha, it will considered as remaining in the pure way.  If this clarity occurs it is said to be mathi or knowledge/wisdom.  Agatthiyar tells Pulatthiyar to remain in this state of Vedanta, truthfully, and look at the poornam or the Divine with mental focus.

276. See all the attachments and perform rechakam

Verse 276

Translation:
Yes son, in the effective exchange/in the action of sath
There are several crores of support,
If interest in them is dismissed
They will say it is respect, lakshya.
With all the wisdom heard
The great state faltering, meet them
Without us faltering as wife, offspring
All the attachments, think about them with rechakam

Commentary:
Agatthiyar continues the previous verse that one should not falter but understand the attachments such as wife and offspring (which are millions in number) clearly with the help of the wisdom learnt so far.  One should see them in their true state with  exhalation.  Exhalation signifies leaving things out, detachment.  During breathing the person leaves the breath during rechakam.  Along with the breath he also leave attachments, erroneous understandings etc.

Translation:
After pushing away (vrtti) like your shadow and becoming enlightenend
Considering self as existence awareness and bliss (satchidananda)
To attain clarity, joining the siddhantha
And listening is sravanam.
Performing pravrithi and nivrithi
All the citizens who remain good
Are all god, the fully complete-
The discrimination that announces this is sravanam.

Commentary:
In the previous verse Agatthiyar mentioned that sravanam is obtaining textual knowledge, Vedanta.  Here he explains what that knowledge will reveal.  Before that we should understand the difference between Vedanta and Siddhantha.  Tirumular in his Tirumandiram calls his philosophical system as Vedanta Siddhantha.  Vedanta is knowledge from the Vedas or knowledge systems that one should know.  However, as the Vedas present all kinds of knowledge, for example bedha (pluralistic), abedha (monistic) and bedha-abhedha or qualified monistic views one has to choose the branch of these knowledge one wishes to follow.  This is siddhantham.  In this verse Agatthiyar describes the Siddhantham.  After hearing from the Guru about Vedanta one has to pick the siddhantha, join that branch and listen to knowledge specific for that standpoint.  After that one has  to perform “pravriti and nivriti”.  The word pravriti= pra+vriti or towards vriti, expansion outwards.  Nivriti on the other hand is ni+vriti or not going outward by inward, mental focus.  The mind expands as the outside word and focusses as the single point.  Thus when one understands the truth about the outside world one realizes the forces that cause pravriti and nivriti.  One understands that it is the One, Supreme Being who appears as many lifeforms outside.  This is pravriti and nivriti.  Agatthiyar says that one will understand that all the citizens are god, the poorna or fully complete.  Thus watching the pravriti one reaches nivriti.  Agattiyar says that this is sravanam. One attains this knowledge through buddhi or distinction of truth.

274. Sravanam

Verse 274

Translation:
Listen son, all the actions and those that are included by them
Correcting them for our sake
For those who watch them with focus it is good fortune
Know that it is beneficial
All with the benefit of the sastra
Stringing them in a line is sravanam (hearing)
Leaving all the sastra
Push away the extensions that dance around.

Commentary:
The process of knowing something follows the three steps of sravanam or hearing about knowledge, mananam or internalizing it and nidhidhyasanam or contemplation.  These three are not sequential processes but one that occurs continuously. Merely hearing the knowledge is not sufficient, one has to clear his doubts and internalize it.  These two steps are done in the presence of a teacher.  The last step is contemplation.  This makes the person realize what he learnt. Hence, Agatthiyar is saying that one has to watch all the sitthu or action.  This includes both physical and mental actions.  One has to watch them carefully to understand their inner significance.  One has to obtain knowledge as if one is stringing beads.  Knowledge is presented in a sequence as it reflects the thought of the one who composed that source.  As thought procedes in a sequence it is like stringing beads.  By understanding the sastra one will give up vritti or modifications, extensions or extrapolations as these give erroneous vision and ideas.

273. Dhaana and Dharma

Verse 273

Translation:
Offer your belongings to the priests of Siva, Brahma and Vishnu
To those who belong to your land and foreign land
For Kshatriya and Vaishya
To attain wellness and for all others in the world
Perform dhaana and dharma
The people of the world will say so, the Supreme One!
Considering their comfort as that of oneself
Listen to all others clearly.

Commentary:
Agatthiyar says that one should offering things to priests of Siva, Vishnu and Brahma.  Aradesi and Paradesi are used to referred to wandering mendicants.  Aradesi are those who belong to one’s land or ahadesam.  Paradesi is generally used to refer to a beggar but it actually means “one who belongs to another land”.  Agattthiyar says that one should offer dhaana and dharma.  This is like the terms “aiyam and picchai” that Andal uses in Tiruppaavai.  Aiyam is the dhaanam that is given to those who deserve to receive it.  It may be because of their qualification.  Picchai is dharmam or alms given to another, generally to a beggar.  Besides this Agatthiyar tells Pulathiyar that he should make others comfortable just as how he would like to be.  This is jeeva kaarunyam or mercy towards to other lives.

272. Dhaana

Verse 272

Translation:
Knowing this is aastheekam.
With grace flowing, all the things that are seen,
Knowing about them, about good actions, time and innate faults-
Knowing their action and offering these
 things is called dhaana (philanthropy)
Knowing this and absorbing Guru’s words within
Remaining as mukhta with the mind focusing.
All the property that one owns-
Offering it happily at the gurupadam, perform dhyana.

Commentary:
Agatthiyar says that aasthikam or spirituality is understanding about the nature of things, time, innate impurities.  Then he describes dhaana the next component of niyama.  He defines it as offering everything to others after knowing the right time, what should be offered and the effects of such offering.  While this is for normal offering in the world the supreme offering is surrendering everything to Gurupadam.  Gurupadam or locus of guru refers to the Divine who remains all pervading.  Offering everything to Gurupadam means considering everything as God's, not have the feeling of possession.  This is the state of muktha who offers the things, their functions and the benefit from their function to the Lord. This is ultimate dhaana.
