255. Dhyana-1

Verse 255

Translation:
Dhyanam
I will tell you about ten types of dhyana
Dhyana of the body to attain mercy
Remain and experience the six adhaara
The truthful dhyana of the mandala
Examine the dhyana of brahmam
The detailed dhyaana of Vishnu
Go and experience the dhyana of Rudra
Siva sivaa, the dhyana of the deities

Commentary:
While dhaarana was holding the mind firmly on various objects dhyana is losing the sense of meditation and remaining with only the distinctions of meditator and the object of meditation.  The sense of meditation is lost here.  Agatthiyar lists the ten types of dhyana in this verse.  They are the body, the six adhaara or cakra, the three mandala of sun, moon and fire, the brahman, Vishnu, Rudra and all other deities.
One wonders whether it is should be dhyana of Brahma instead of Brahman here as the list seems to be proceeding through the various deities in the cakra. Devadhi may also mean Maheswara or Sadasiva.

254. Dhaarana

Verse 254

Translation:
Dharana
See the six types of dharana
The bhuta dharana
The prana dhaarana
The truthful kaarna dhaarana
Know this, dhaarana of divinity
Dhaarana of principles that remain together
See, the brahma dhaarana
See these six types with mercy.

Commentary:
Dhaara is the sixth step in ashtanga yoga.  It means holding the mind steadfastly on an object.  While prathi aahara meant replacing the commonly focused object with a different one dhaarana means holding one’s mind on the object so placed.  The commonly focused six objects, body, senses, breath, modifications of the mind, desires and all other associations are replaced with six different objects during dhaarana. In this state there is the distinction of meditator, the act of meditation and the object of meditation.  The step helps the yogin understand the subtleties of the object that is being meditated upon.

Agatthiyar lists the six dhaarana in this verse.  They are elements, movement of prana, the true causes behind everything, the divinities that cause all the events, physical and mental, the principles or tattva that remain and act together, the brahmam or the supreme divinity. Dhaarana helps the yogin understand the truth behind these various principles.

253. Benefits of prathyaharam

Verse 253

Translation:
Prathiyaharam
The six prathyaharam
Knowing it by the grace of sathguru
See the yoga through valorous mind
Examine the Vedantha sastra with interest
Consume the essence, the amrita rasa
Remain associated with the poornam at all times
If you get fatigued thinking it is too much
Then it is hard to experience devotion and liberation.

Commentary;
Agatthiyar tells Pulathiyar that he should practice the six types of prathyahara by the grace of Guru.  He should understand yogam or union with the divine through the mind.  He should examine and realize Vedantha sastra.  He should consume the amrita rasa and remain eternally associated with Poornam or the fully complete, Supreme.  If one gives up saying that this is all too much then it is impossible to attain devotion and liveration.

252. Prathyaharam

Verse 252

Translation:
Without fear, the six types of prathyahara
Son, I will tell you, you hear well.
The infant, sareera prathyahara
The form, indriya prathyaharam
The heart, the prana prathyahara
The truthful, internal senses prathyahara
The five kamyam prathyahara
See son, the sarva sanga prathyahara

Commentary:
The term prathyaharam can be split as prathi+aaharam.  Ahaaram is the food, in this case what it feeds on, what activates it.  Prathi aaharam means changing what these entites feed on, what is experienced or controlled by them.

There are six types of prathyahara.  They are sareera prathyahara- that which the body experiences, the indriya prathyahara- those that the senses experience, prana prathyahara- the food for the prana, karana prathyahara- the entities that the modifications of mind or internal senses feed on, the kaamya prathyahara- that which qualities such as desire, etc feed on and sarva sanga prathyahara- all the others unspecified in the above list such as property, gold, land etc.  The five including kaamyam are aanava, kamyam, maya, mahamaya and tirodhaayi.

251. Pranayama- types

Verse 251

Translation:
Pranayama
See, the types of pranayama are five
I will tell you with devotion, you hear sincerely
The rechaka, pooraka, kumbaka
The truthful saubheejam and nirbheejam are the five
Knowing these by guru’s grace
Seeing the essence of the pranayama
Become an expert, by remaining with mental clarity
Siva sivaa, the siva yogam, in its great form.

Commentary
Agatthiyar lists the five types of pranayama as rechaka, pooraka, kumbaka, sabheejam and nirbheejam.  Rechaka is exhalation, pooraka is inhalation, kumbaka is arresting the breath, saubheejam is regulating the breath with a seed letter, nirbheejam is regulating it without any such props.  Agatthiyar tells Pulatthiyar that pranayama will clear the mind so that one can perform siva yogam with full force.  Suffice to say this much here as Agatthiyar is describing all these in detail in a section to follow.

250. Asana

Verse 250

Translation:
Asana
Listen and see details about nind types of asana
Son, along with sthiram, gomukham
Expand it to Padma, veeram, Son
Along with it the singa, badram
Muktham, mayuram, son
Sukam thus they are nine in number
Seeing the nine within you
You see the ashtanga yogam.

Commentary:
Agatthiyar mentions nine types of asana.  They are sthiram or svasthikasanam, gomukham or the cow pose, padmam,/padmasanam or lotus pose, veeram or warrior pose, singaasanam or lion pose, bhadram or auspicious pose, mukhtham or liberation pose, mayurm or peacock pose, sukham or more comfortable pose.

While these are generally considered as external poses Agatthiyar says that one should see them inside.  These poses produce certain states within.  They alter the flow of prana, the state of mind and other factors within thus enabling performance of ashtanga yoga.  Hence, Agatthiyar tells Pulathiyar to watch the effects of these poses within.
