138. Rahu and ketu

Verse 138

Translation:
With Uma seeing Vishnu
He became Rahu and Ketu.
The jyothi, rishi and auspicious day
The new moon day, thithi day and karanam
Due to the nine sitthu/new sitthu, becoming the planets
After pervading the great world
The stars, raasi, yogam
Were created later to thrive.

Commentary:
This verse shows that while the Siddhas dismiss spurious religiosity they accept sacred times, days and constellations.  These were created to perform certain actions that would be more beneficial at these times as the stars and planets have a counterpart within our body. Rahu and Ketu are depicted as a snake or a dragon with its head towards the lowerpart of the the body.  Ketu is the tail which is present near our head.  In planetary context these represent the intersection points between the sun and moon’s path in the celestial sphere.  They are not planets.  Eclipses occur when the sun and the moon are at these points and hence it is traditionally said that the snake swallows the moon.

137. Planets

Verse 137

Translation:
Brahma saying it to the lady Uma,
She became the moon and the sun.
The Sadasiva became the king.
The glorious Maheswara became Saturn.
The body, Rudra, became Sankara
The truthful Maal became Mercury.
The Brahma became Venus.
For Rahu and ketu

Commentary:
Agatthiyar lists the gods who became the nine planets.
Mercury-budha- neutral- Vishnu
Venus- shukra- feminine- Brahma
Mars- kuja- masculine- may be Sadasiva
Jupiter- guru-masculine- Rudra
Saturn- sani- neutral- Maheswara
Sun- surya- masculine      - Uma
Moon-chandra-feminine
Rahu- dragon head- feminine   - Vishnu
Ketu- dragon tail- neutral.

One wonders when he says that Rudra became Sankara he is referring to guru and when he refers to Sadasiva as raja he means kuja.  This iconography differs from traditional tantric view of the planets in our body.
We have seen in Agatthiyar meijnana kaviyam the relationship between the planets, the chakra and the zodiac signs.
It is given below once again.
David Frawley in his book Astrology of the seers gives the connection between the different cakras and the twelve zodiac signs.

136. Creation of astronomical elements

Verse 136

Translation:
Vishnu muni, thinking about Brahma
Who came there and told him the method.
Twenty seven starts along with asupathi (ashvini)
And the nine planets- to create them
After telling how to create them, the lady
Sadasiva and Maheswara
Nurturing, Rudra and Maal
Came there when Paran thought about them gloriously.

Commentary:
Agatthiyar is talking about creation of planets and stars.  This is the next stage in evolution.  The body soul complex was created first.  Consciousness, the flame, was enshrined there. Now the causes for various experiences- the nine planets and the stars were created.

Our ancestors believed that what is present in the macrocosm is also present in the microcosm.  That is, the stars and planets in the sky have a corresponding component in the human body.  We shall see the relationship between the planets and cakras in our body in the coming verses.

The causes for manifestation as astronomical elements are Sakthi, Sadasiva, Maheswara, Rudra, Vishnu and Brahma.  However, the process is initiated by Vishnumuni and Brahma, that is, the muladhara and svadishtana cakra.

135. Vishnu muni granted boon

Verse 135

Translation:
The vedics performed fire rituals
Vishnumuni appeared
And told them to ask for boon.
The six sruti appearing as Veda
With the day and time being auspicious
With my words becoming superior
In the suspended space
The glorious flame that is not seen by anyone
Will speak, See!

Commentary:
Agatthiyar says that Vishnu muni appeared before the vedics who performed the fire rituals and offered them boons.  The fire ritual may mean kundalini yoga where the fire of kundalini is raised.  This offers several boons such as mystical accomplishments and several states of consciousness.  The flame referred to here is the atma jyothi which transforms into param jyothi.

134. Food is the basis for everything

Verse 134

Translation:
Due to the food, sleep occurred
With knowledge, pleasure, old age and youth occurred
Speedily desire occurred
Deceitfulness, birth and death occurred
Several temples and rivers occurred
The class of the king of the world occurring
Performing the royal adornments well,
He created auspicious day and time of the day. See!

Commentary:
Agatthiyar tells us that all the divisions, distinctions, dualities that we see are due to food.  Food caused sleep, pleasure, stages of life, birth and death, along with behavior.  People also created temples, rivers, classes of society and auspicious times.

133. Nagamuni, Rajamuni

Verse 133

Translation:
Listen, Nagamuni, for the sake of the world
Told the eighteen languages
The Rajamuni, gave tarka sastra (logic)
The great Vedanta, the philosophy of pearl
The way of breath, to know about self, and the sastra of physical relationship
The manu who knew this, experienced benefits and troubles
The six tastes, showing the nectar
He became dependent on food, with the boat (body).

Commentary:
Agatthiyar says that another saint, Nagamuni gave the world the eighteen languages and that Rajamuni gave the tarka sastra, Vedanta, the sastra about pearls (one wonders if this is chippi or silpi sastra- the architecture), the sastra of breath and the madhana sastra.  We are not sure if Rajamuni also refers to Nagamuni as Agatthiyar mentioned that he was born in the Kshatriya jathi, the ruling class.  The manu or the soul experienced the dualities- good and bad, six distinct flavors etc due to his dependence on food.  The term vangam means boat.  One wonders whether Agatthiyar is saying that the soul along with the boat, the body, became dependent on food and experienced the world as we know it.
