113. Lord's reply to Agatthiyar

Verse 113

Translation:
While standing there saluting him, the vedhiyon (the embodiment of knowledge)
The jnana marga (path of wisdom) is very esoteric
The personal and favorable subtlety
Listen to the story of the singular letter, the subtlety
The sign of the origin and terminus with its qualities in focus
I will tell, listen carefully.

Commentary:
When Agatthiyar stood saluting the Lord, the Divine told him that the jnana marga or path of wisdom is very esoteric, very personal and very subtle.  The lord proceeded to tell him about the singular letter- omkara and the sign of aadhi antham or origin terminus. Two lines are missing in this verse.

112 Great statement and meeting the Lord

Verse 112

Translation:
The yajna muni, one who rules this world, Sir!
The Rishi, muni and Siddha
Those who attained the great name and austerity
Will be born in this world this way, is the statement
Uttering the name and removing the dregs from the mind
Showing the way to not be born, granting the nectar
Offering service, saying rule me
I worshipped his sacred feet/locus in the proper way.

Commentary:
Agatthiyar says that his explanation of how and why great souls are born is also confirmed by the great statement.  He says that Siddhas, rishis and munis or realized souls are born this way. He adds that he worshipped the sacred feet that gave this statement serving it and saying, “Remove mental dregs, show me the path, offer the nectar, rule me”

111. When a Siva jnani is born into this world...

Verse 111

Translation:
Explanation of the origin and terminus
To those who have realized sivajnana
The glory of the merciful ones who have performed immense austerities
Nurturing the gross by turning it into subtle
Remaining as the cause for the subtle, the locus
Remaining with the origin and terminus as one
As the brilliance of the light of the flame
They will be born in this world to nurture
Even if they are born they will become Sivayogi, see this.

Commentary:
Agatthiyar describes the birth of a soul that has attained the jnana state.  Such a soul would have exhausted the cause and effect, the reason for a birth and further births.  This is the origin and terminus.  Such a soul will end the gross manifestions by transforming them into subtle manifestations, for example the gross senses to subtle senses.  Then the subtle state, the locus the cause for the gross state is exchanged for the karana or causal state.  Thus they remain in the karana nilai, the origin terminating the gross state, the kaariya nilai.  They will remain in the form of jyothi.  Even when they are born again into this world they remain a sivayogi, one who I eternally associated with sivam or consciousness.  They are born to nurture the world.

This verse explains why great saints and liberated souls take birth in this world and their status when they are born so.

110. The jnana remains in siva jnana yogam

Verse 110

Translation:
Removing the three innate impurities in the three voids (paazh)
Over the hair bridge above the state of self
Going beyond the river of fire, the sky
With the mind abiding in the supreme space
In the king, the efflugence of the space, as self
The siva yoga jnana that is focused
As the state of self at the terminus of the body, the vaadhi
Are those who remain desiring it, those who realized sivajnana.

Commentary:
The three innate impurities are egoity (aanava), doership (karma) and delusion (maya).  Paazh or void is like a region or zone that separates each of these three impurities.  Tirumular explains these three voids in tantiram 8 section 27.  Realizing the gross body, subtle body, jnanendriya, karmendriya, anthakarana and prakriti as different from the self helps the soul to cross the maya paazh or the void of maya.  Realizing that the seven vidya tattva of kala, kaala, niyathi, raga etc as the causes for limitations helps the soul cross the bodha paazh.  Realizing the nature of cause and effect or karya and karana leads to crossing the upasantha paazh.  When a soul crosses these three voids, it remains in a pure state of knowledge.  Agatthiyar calls this state as the state of sivajnana yoga or association with siva jnana, a state free of any limitations. Hair bridge and river of fire are symbolism to indicate the path of consciousness that reaches the supreme state.  The jnani remains as the effulgence of the space, at the point where the body and limitations terminate.

109. The jnani remains as jeeva pranamaya

Verse 109

Translation:
Listen son, cutting the screen of Brahma and Vishnu
Removing the screen of merciful Rudra
Push the screen of Maheswara and rule
Tie up the screen of Sadasiva that is above it
Burning away the five senses, take pledge
Remaining with the blissful, embodiment of jiva prana,
Beyond the eye and the ear
They will remain mercifully as prana, the jnani.

Commentary:
We saw in the previous verse that jnana is a state attained by a yogin as a consequence of charya kriya and yoga.  These three steps help the yogin to cross several principles represented by thr deities, Brahma, Vishnu, Rudra etc.  In this verse Agatthiyar equates these limiting principles to screens.  He tells Pulatthiyar to cut away one screen at a time and reach the state above Sadasiva.  The limitations caused by the senses are also removed and the soul remains as Jivapranamaya.  Such souls are the jnani or saints who remain beyond sensual distractions of ears and eyes. He remains in a state where he gathers knowledge without the interference of the senses.

108. Jnana state

Verse 108

Translation:
From charya to jnana, I revealed,
See the self knowing it as samarasa
If you see the soul and the body
From charya to jnana will occur as truth
By the grace of guru, son,
To look with focus the state of jnana carefully
To climb the sky from charya up to jnana
Listen about the subtlety, in the proper way.

Commentary:
Among the four steps, charya, kriya, yoga and jnana the first three occur due to the yogin’s effort.  Jnana, on the other hand, occurs as a consequence of the first three steps.  Jnana is a state.  Samadhi that is attained during yoga gives a glimpse of this jnana state.  Hence, it was mentioned before that Samadhi is not a permanent state.  There is the distinction of the knower and known.  In the jnana state the yogin becomes that state.  He experiences being that state, being the five doers, Siva, Sakthi, the seven worlds etc.  This occurs due to guru’s grace.  However this state is also not a permanent state as the yogin has not crossed the restrictions of the body.  He experiences being in the all pervasive state while still remaining in the body.  The soul and body mentioned here refers to akara and ukara. Akara the letter which stands for Siva represents the soul and ukara the letter that stands for Sakthi represents the body.

107. A jnani will remain as aham brahmasmi

Verse 107

Translation:
Yes, son, the discussing one, as that entity
The abiding five performers as that/self
The self as Sakthi and Siva
As the merciful five doers as self
The seven worlds
Being self, with fortitude
The “I am Him”
The jnani (wise one) is one who remains as jyothi (effulgence).

Commentary:
Agatthiyar says that the jnani or the one who has reached the step of jnana will remain as the supreme entity, the five doers or performers namely Sadasiva, Maheswara, Rudra, Vishnu and Brahma and the seven worlds- bhu, bhuvar, suvar, maha, tapa, jana and satyam.  He will remain with the consciousness “I am Him”- Aham Brahmasmi.  He will remain as the effulgence or flame.
