97. The journey of kriya begins from muladhara

Verse 97

Translation:
See son, below the turiya
Within the mulam, the effulgence of flame that remained holding it
Praising the Ganapathi and worshipping him
Offering the flower of vassi with mercy,
With that vaasi, going up
If you remain as fully complete
Those who do not know how to remain in an associated stae
Will hesitate to immerse in it.

Commentary:
Tamil Siddhas and especially Tirumular have assigned locations where consciousness remains during different states such as wakeful state, dream state, deep sleep and turiya.  The fifth state or turiyathatha is localized to muladhara while tuirya is at the navel, deep sleep at the heart, dream state at the neck and wakeful state at ajna.  The first line refers to this when Agatthiyar says below the turiya.  He is reefing to the turiyathitha state and the muladhara.  This is the locus of Ganapathi, the ruling deity of this location.  A yogin begins his journey of raising his consciousness from muladhara after worshiping Ganapathy and raising it to ajna.  Those who do not know this procedure will hestitate to immerse themselves in this experience.

96. Kriya-2 Its effects

Verse 96

Translation:
If you remain there offering it,
All the sins will be expiated
Praising the wonder of the adhara
Attaining the capabilities of vaasi
Praising the chinmaya of the eye.
People who do not know this, with wrong desire
Without knowing how to perform it,
They will roam around, they do not know the way of kriya, see.

Commentary:
In this second verse on kriya Agatthiyar says that when one raises the consciousness to ajna, “sees” Siva and sakthi as the flame and offers the lifeforce all the sins will leave.  One will realize the uniqueniess, wonder of the adhara and see the embodiment of chith or consciousness as the flame in the third eye.  Without knowing this procedure people perform all kinds of rituals and whirl around without any benefit.

95. Kriya-1

Verse 95

Translation:
See son, I told you about the way of charya
Now listen to me talk about kriya
In the triangle
Above the twelve fully complete petals
Go to the triangle
Within the temple of Siva, Uma and Siva (remain), like a lamp
See it with the flower of the ball of the eye
Offer the flower of merciful vaasi.

Commentary:
Agatthiyar talks about kriya in this verse.  He mentions that Siva and Sakthi remain like a lamp above the heart cakra.  Agatthiyar tells Pulathiyar to go perceive this light at the triangle or the ajna cakra and offer vaasi or lifeforce to them.  He calls this as kriya.

94. Sivalaya and the benefit of worshipping there

Verse 94
Translation:
Below the poorakam (manipuraka), the self
There are Siva temples and rivers
The king, the anahatah, beyond the hair-like bridge
There are Siva temples and rivers
Taking the flower of vaasi, the space
Worship the Sivalaya.
Without knowing the honey, the body and the soul
They roam around in maya dumbfounded.

Commentary:
As before Agatthiyar says that there are Siva temples and sacred rivers below the manipurakam and above the anahatha.  He calls the nadi that runs towards the head as “hairbridge” because they very thin and subtle.  He tells Pulathiyar to perform worship rituals there, that is visit these sites through kundalini yoga.  Those who do not know this, the secret about the body, the soul, the sites of consciousness and the honey that oozes from the sahasrara roam around dumbfounded by maya.  Knowledge and experience of these will cut the influence of maya.

93. The entity that is worshipped and the attitude with which worship is performed

Verse 93

Translation:
The sacred temple of Self, the good rivers
The sastras including Veda
The maya that manu, the body created
Realizing that strong maya and pushing it away
Knowing the action of nadha bindhu the space
For the leaders of the path of meijnana (true wisdom)
Worshiping the king, kechari
Are those who are following the path of charya.

Commentary:
Agatthiyar described the location of the temples and sacred rivers in the body.  Then he described true charya, that it is entering the nadi, reaching the cakras within and performing worship rituals.  In this verse he describes the entity for which the puja ritual is performed.
The Divinity that is worshiped in the cakras is “kechari”.  We have already seen what kechari means (verse 5 and 87), that it the entity that roams in space, consciousness.  As it is true with any worship this worship should also be performed with true understanding.  One should be aware of the sacred loci within the body, the nadi or the rivers, the knowledge systems including the Vedas and sastras, the maya which creates the body-the manu, the strong influence of maya, the nature of nadha and bindhu and how to get rid of maya.
Without these the worship will not be fruitful as it is not performed with awareness.  Those in the path of true wisdom or meijnana will follow this method.  According to Agatthiyar this is the path of charya.

92. True Charya

Verse 92

Translation:
Seeing it, understanding it, immersing in that river
Worshipping the lotus temple of Siva,
People who do not see the state of how they remain
Search for temples and rivers in the wide world
Going there and roaming around greatly, suffering,
Without knowing the status of the soul, will die dumbfounded.
Without knowing the soul and the body, the “andam” (universe)
Will wander.  They are those who do not know the path of charya.

Commentary:
After pointing out to the temples and rivers inside Agatthiyar tells us what a person who is knowledgeable about charya will do.  He will identify the site through the mind as it is not perceivable by external senses.  He will immerse himself in the river, the nadi.  That is he will direct his consciousness to the nadi.  He will worship the “kamala malar sivaalayam” the Siva temple of lotus, the cakras.  This is true charya, temple worship.  Those who do not know this are the ones who run searching for temples and sacred rivers in the external world and die in the end without realizing that the universe is actually their soul and body combination.

91. Charya, Temples and Rivers one has to bathe in and worship

Verse 91

Translation:
Charya, Kriya, yoga and Jnana

If (you) ask about the path of charya
The merciful Pulatthiya!  Listen to me,
Above the letter “navvu”
The glorious “sikaara” will emerge by the letter “mavvu”
Going above the letter “mavvu”
Below the locus of that letter
There are temples of Siva and rivers
Seeing that place with purity and realize.

Commentary:
In this first verse on the four step pathway of charya, kriya, yoga and jnana Agatthiyar is explaining charya.  Charya is external discipling.  It involves going to temples, performing worship rituals etc.  These are external rituals.  In the siddha marga an external ritual has an internal component.  Agatthiyar describes what is a temple and what is sacred water body in this verse.

Siddhas and other tantric systems assign bija akshara or seed letters to the cakras.  These letters correspond to different principles.  They also serve as mantra to invoke certain mental and spiritual states.  Please refer to the verses in Agatthiyar meijnana kaviyam verses 88 onwards.  (www.scribd.com or http://agatthiyarjnanam.blogspot.in/) where these are explained in detail.

Agatthiyar describes the terrain from muladhara to manipuraka in terms of the letters assigned to these loci.  The letter for the muladhara cakra is“na” and the letter for svadishtana is “ma” while the letter for manipuraka is “ci”.   Agattthiyar tells Pulatthiyar that between below the letter “ma” there are Siva temples and sacred waters and one should worship them.  Between the muladhara and svadishtana is the kanda moolam, the site from which the nadis emerge.  This place is called Pothigai in the Siddha parlance.  Agatthiyar described the location of Brahma in the previous verse (verse 59) as that below the svadishtana.  This locus is between the two cakras and the best way to describe it is to say that it is below makaara and nakaara.

From this verse we understand why the Siddhas deplore running to different temples and sacred water bodies while they are all within us.  Please recall Sivavaakiyar verse “what is a temple what is a sacred tank” (verse 34) here.
